Trek 2300

Hi, I'm kind of new to the world of bikes and of bike maintenance. I have a trek 2300, and am trying to modernize it. I am wondering what models of Bottom bracket would work with my bike. Thank you- Jonny_B

What kind of crank do you want on there?
Basically nothing BB30 or PF30 will fit, they aren't wide enough.
Anything square taper, octolink, isis, bb386, GXP, Hollowtech II and a couple others will fit. What year 2300 are you even dealing with, those went from carbon with metal lugs, to all aluminum to aluminum with carbon stays and came with anything from 7sp to 10sp depending on the year it was made. If its a 7sp I'm not certain how upgradeable they are, I think one or two years were steel and could be spread for a 130mm hub and a couple of 7sp years were aluminum and shouldn't be spread for a 130mm 8-11sp hub. If its 8sp or more then any upgrades are relatively possible.

From at least the early '90's 7-speed Trek frames were usually spaced 128 mm and could accept both 126 mm and 130 mm hubs with no problems. My 1992 Trek 1420 was originally 7-speed with a 126 mm hub but was spaced 128 mm and upgrading it to a 130 mm 8-speed hub was effortless.

I have a 1996 Trek 2300 with an 8 speed cassette, I stripped the original crank, so I have a Shimano Tourney crankset. I also bought the bike with an Aeromax 700c aluminum wheelset. I am broke right now but am going to spend what I can on improving my bike this summer.

That bike has a standard 68mm wide english threaded bottom bracket shell. What bottom bracket you need will be determined by the crank chosen to use within that shell.
