Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Got a new bike, Has Speedplay clipless pedals?

Well, new to me anyways... I was told they are Speedplay Clipless pedals, And I googled them for images and they look the same to me. So how can i tell which model they are? Also, do I need a specific brand shoe, or will any clipless/clip-in pedal work with these pedals? I have onle ridden regular MTB/BMX style pedals so far...

Here's pics of the "new" bike!

They are speedplay but I can't tell from these pics what model they are. Did the previous owner not know? Did they give you cleats to go with them or do you have to buy your own? You can use three hole road shoes if you do not have the four hole shoes.

Nice ride by the way...

Thanks. I do have the cleats. If by cleats you mean the circular thing and the flat plastic piece, lol... Im new to the clipsless thing. He was going to give me the shoes as well, but i am not to fond of wearing some other person shoes which most likely were sweat in, heavily...

The owner didnt seem to know much about the bike. He bought it at a bike shop as it was reccommened and sised for him. He rode it on occasion, and realized it wasnt for him. Then it came to me. So maybe someone can help me identify what year it may be? I think they only made the Split R for 2-3 years? This is my second bike now. My first was a 2010 Giant Defy 3 which I loved. But soon realized it was to large for me. This bike is a big step up from my Giant and correctly sized for me. Its just so much smoother to ride in everyway.

Take it to the local LBS, they should be able to figure out which cleats you will need, and set you up with shoes too if you need them

Nice bike though

+1. Do the cleats have little screws on them to adjust the float? The "Zero's" have them.

If you get a pic of just the pedals, I'm sure we'll be able to tell you which model they are.

Then you're really going to hate riding on his saddle.

Do the pedals have four notches on the corners that run from the top of the pedal to edge of the pedal or do they have four little dimples on the very top of the pedal?

I just searched everywhere and realised I left my camea at work. I am building a race motor for my Mazda Rx2 and was taking pics of the machine work I am doing to it. Hopefully it will be faster than my road bike!

It looks to have four notches, one in each corner on each side. I did not see any dimples. They feel fairly heavy for their size. So I am sure they are a type of steel, not sure which kind though. Definitly not Ti.

If it has notches, they are Zeros. If the medal is silver in color, it is either Ti or stainless. Ti is not magnetic, stainless is. If they are painted black, they are chromoly.

Edit: Zero new cleats

New cleats with Zeros suck for about the first ten rides. Clipping in and out will be very difficult unil the cleats break in. Then, they will be easy. If you have a trainer, put the bike on the trainer and clip in and out a lot and it the cleats will get easier.

The Roo brand is highly prized by the triathalon crowd - hence the aero bars and seat mount bottle cages but your's looks more like a road bike to me.

The metal is painted black, making them chromoly which explains the heavy feel. I have the cleats as well. They look o be "broken in" already. After googling Speedplay Zero chromoly, this is exactly what I have. Thanks!

This is in fact a road bike by design/geometry. From what I could find by various searches this is the one and only road bike that Qintana Roo has made. Every other bike has been a Tri style bike. After taking my first ride today (with regular style pedals) I think they did a damn good job!

Speedplay X pedals are perfectly round and flat. Light Action adds oval-shaped indentations in an X pattern next to the "bow tie." These function as exit ramps. Zero pedals have a notched profile, and the cleats have adjustment screws for cleat angle and float.

I do keep hearing/reading the term "float" when reading up on these pedals. What exactly does this mean?

Pedals with float allow your foot to move around a bit without releasing.

Your feet will rotate to the right and left as you pedal.
