Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Nothing too excitable. I posted this here before. It's my 1990 Trek 1400 with several updates made over the years. It's still a 7sp, but with a new crank and BB, brifters, and a carbon threadless front end.

She rides wonderfully.

^^ Beautiful

How does that compare to a modern aluminum frame (if you've had the chance to ride one)? Do you notice any significant disparity between road vibration?

I haven't put too many miles on other late model AL road frames to compare. My other main road bike that I've used interchangeably the past several years was a Litespeed Ti (and I was primarily an MTBer even when I had the Trek), but I can say that the 1400 isn't more harsh (I use 25mm tires on both) than my Litespeed. I did think the ride became noticeably more comfortable after replacing the front end though, from its OEM bonded aluminum fork with a steel threaded steerer. The carbon fork eliminated a lot of front end harshness. My rides are typically 30-60 miles and I don't at all feel beat up from riding it. Back in the day (circa 1990), it was Trek's top shelf all aluminum model right as they were getting more involved in carbon. From past reviews, many have reported (and continue to report) that it was one of the nicer rides they've ever ridden, and I can understand why. It is surprisingly comfortable, and many disbelieve that it is now a 22 year old frame (the internal top tube brake routing and pearlescent paint is a nice touch). This frame was made (and bike assembled with a complete 105 group including the hubs) in Trek's Waterloo, WI, facility, and even the Matrix semi-aero rims came from there.

For grins, here is what it looked like originally prior to its transformation:

Have I found the right thread for my 1999 Trek 5200 OLCV? Love this bike- very zippy and feels great on Seattle hills. Thinking about switching to a 2x up front.

Well I just got it in and it's not a complete bike yet but it is a Trek OCLV. A NOS Y-foil that'll be put together this winter.

I think the UCI banned that design like right before a TT stage at the Tour. There was a Canadian company making a bike with a similar design. Put them right out of business. If I am remembering correctly. I bet there’s not too many of those frames around. Great find!

My black Madone 9 to counter the white one. I still think the H1 fit frame looks way better though.
Madone 9, Ultegra 6800 DI2, Aeolus Pro 5 wheels

I think an H2 fit with no headset spacers looks better than an H1 with spacers to get the same stack.
If you need an H1 to get your fit then the aesthetics doesn't come into it as that is the only option.

One of my fav's Lr. Love the look of that bike. I remember walking into a bike shop a couple of towns over and seeing that same bike so many years ago and took all the will power I had not to buy it. Its beautiful and of course conjures the era in cycling that is hard to forget.

Guys who own all the Trek's here that have shown their bikes. Thanks for that. Love the walk down memory lane. Every once in a while I see a guy on a Postal model Trek on the road and have to ask him about its past. Always loved that bike.
