Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

NYC - looking for riderz

i am visiting the family for 2 weeks(in the bronx) and looking for aggressive, fixed gear accompaniment for some city riding. i spent the afternoon on the upper west side and then midtown and some l.e.s. and then back uptown. i pushed it as hard as i could, it being my first experience riding fixed in manhattan, but held back for safety. it would be nice to meet some folk. numbers means power means good ride.

i will be in the bronx or westchester county until jan 6th. im not an out-of-towner, but i've been living upstate for the last 4yrs and im not in touch with the real new york community. im 22. no brake. run light. skitch bus.

anyone ever been ticketed for running lights?

what part of the bronx? im in the end of bronx beginning where mount vernon starts. towards the last stop of the 2 train, 233 whiteplains road. i run a brake gear 42x16 and i play agressive safety. wont catch me running through intersections like a messenger but i do run it if its clear not with car passing doing the messenger hook. i ride overall about 15-17 mphs. im 19

I live in Astoria, but will be in the BX eating and chillin with my family the next two days. Didn't know there was anyone else from the Bronx on here. I'll be over near Eastchester Road/Pelham Parkway. If anyone wants to ride Xmas morning we could do a mini Bronx tour.

mini bronx tour sounds sick. what time? know any others that would want to ride?

na975... are you under 14yrs of age? don't you know it's illegal to ride on the sidewalk?! while i don't have brakes or reflecters and i run lights, rarely yield, and skitch buses, i do have a bell on my bars and stick to the road.

i used to wear a faceless, CCM hockey helmet that i spray painted chrome. some thought it was cool. others thought it was entirely ghetto and stupid. regardless, it was all i had after getting two concussions in a week. the second one knocked me out cold on the side of the road. straight up **** victim style, in a ditch, body all mangled. fortunately i came two after a car honked a horn and a friend took me to the e.r.

no helmet.

what time on the mini tour de bronx?

i posted on the nyc fixed gear thing.

okay ride set up for

DEC 26th at 12PM
W. 110th & Riverside Dr, on parks edge

all are welcome to join. it should be a mixed bag of randoms, so don't feel awkward just showing up.
fixed gear/singlespeed. ride until you tire or get disbanded or something strikes you down.

thanks to "the google" for this photo of park:

yes, on central. theres a guy there, aaron, very cool. gives me free stems and seatposts and lets me use their bar cutters and tools without question. they stock little/no fixed specific products though. they recently got in the raleigh rush hour (not the rush hour pro .. so maybe they will start stocking amazing things like cogs. hah.

central park? i was in there the other day with a bunch of spandex-clad lance armstrongs. they were sort of slow and for some reason they were able to stop pedaling at points and did not skid... i was shocked and appaled and entirely confused. their rear wheels were dished all lop sided, with some large mass of cogs on the right side and some stupid looking hangy thing. they had mounts for 8 water bottles on their machines, non of which they actually drank from, and glasses that cost more than my frameset. and they all looked like my dad.

i stared for a while, trying to understand the logic behind this phenomenon. but then i was blinded by some shimery lyrcra spandex and the outline of another man's testicles, and i ran into a jogger.
