Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Not keeping up with you guys the last few days, but I have a funny thought to share. Although we have a house for 10 days in a small village NW of Nice, we spent last night Bandol area to taste Provencale wine yesterday and today. Stayed in a boutique hotel. The bathroom reminded me that all meanings of the term “French shower” are funny.

The tour of the LIRR extension was neat, although I had the wrong idea of the project. It will extend the LIRR from Queens to Grand Central via a currently unused tunnel under the East River that was built decades ago when a subway tunnel was built. When completed, it will take passengers 9 min. to get from the platforms to street level. One of the escalator rides alone will take 2 min. At this phase, there are about 1,200 workers on site deep below GCT. About 30 seemed to be actually doing work.

MTA | Capital Programs East Side Access

Completion now scheduled for 2022. New estimated cost of over $11 billion.

For a project where the tunnel is already built?

SMH.

The Chinese would do this in half the time at half the cost.

We had to walk down to the platform levels and back up. There were 17 landings on the stairway. Plus, construction came to a halt at one point for various political and funding reasons. You have to see the scope of this project to understand it. It even involves constructing access to new office buildings that haven't even been built yet. A couple of existing buildings are going to be razed and replaced, so they have to try to coordinate with the building designers to solve engineering issues that are unknown.

One really interesting issue is what sort of technology features should be built in. The MTA has actually been having discussions with people like Apple and Google to anticipate what technology will likely be the standard for years from now. Think back to the 1800s, when some canals were made obsolete by railroads not that long after construction was complete. Today's technology development moves even faster.

And it would be easy to build it cheaper and faster with slave labor and lax safety standards.

In case you haven't figured it out, @Velo Vol loves to goad people into political discussions outside of P&R.

Thanks. I thought that might be the case, but I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Not any more.

Anyone ever had an HR strap give intermittent wonky data because of possible corrosion on the contacts between the strap and the sensor itself? Mine keeps doing weird stuff/dropping out despite a battery change, and I see some sweat-induced corroded metal on the little metal bits that snap into the strap. Not sure if that affects its ability to pick up HR, or if it's just a bad unit.

That's what I've always called the "Necessary evil" of unions. Can't live with them, can't live without them.
