24-miler on a there and back ride from santa ysabel and along the length of mesa grande rd and back. windier than i wanted it to be but temps were good and traffic was low as usual along that stretch. had bigger plans but the back is still occasionally reminding me who’s really running the show. what little form i had before these last three weeks is a distant memory.

GMR! Headed up, few cars racing around. Once I was to the shack I thought it got kind of quiet. Turns out while I was up there, the rangers came around and locked the gate!

Felt a lot stronger today and started again from Encanto Park and worked my way up GMR to the shack. All gates were closed today due to fire danger. Did not see LEO on the ground or in the air. I had GRR all to myself; I did not see a soul until a hiker approached me near Cow Canyon Saddle. Perfect Day!

Rewarded myself with a Dr Pepper at the Lodge.

Will try to get to Ice House Trailhead next Sunday. Not crazy about the Ski Lifts descent on the weekend.

90+ degree day with low low humidity in the single digits/low teens. late start past noon. usual ride through balboa park dtown, the waterfront and little italy.
temps dictated a beer ride and hit a new property in bankers hill-pure project-on the corner of 5th and palm (a block west of the western edge of balboa park.
beyond solid beers (tasted a few pilsners and ipas) and nice property.

GMR/GRR up 13 miles then headed down. Got near the bottom then decided to go back up for another 500 ft, trying to get back into shape.

30 miles total/ 3,517 ft gain.

Road closed, not too many riders up there today. Saw a couple of good size groups/clubs go by but not anywhere what I expected.

Did my usual Encanto to Mt Baldy Lodge Out and Back on GMR-GRR. Must have been fifty cyclists today on GRR. Wind was not an issue. Only breezy coming back on GRR. GMR-GRR is really a local treasure.

Starting out on the SGRT heading to Hwy 39 it was breezy and the OHV enthusiasts were already in bunches charging up the hill at 7 AM. Think I will give Crystal Lake a try on Friday when Hwy 39 is relatively quiet.

just over 30 miles from ojai up to the rose valley summit along hwy 33 and back. road quality pretty good but a few racquetball-sized rocks along the road where the thomas fire had denuded the slopes.
always a treat to ride alongside matilja creek, especially in that double tunnel/grotto area. guardrail repair/installation crew were about 2/3 up the climb along with a temporary stoplight controlling about a half-mile stretch. really pretty day/morning with little wind and none of the fallout smoke from various regional fires. one of my fave climbs in socal.

60+ miles heading east into the santa ana winds and the mt. helix/rancho san diego area. up to jamul and past the casino.
hard right onto otay lakes rd for a well-deserved tailwind, down to bonita and over to the bay. north to dtown san diego, then over to
balboa park and home. lots of wind. mixed cool and warm. very few cyclists out. no visible or smellable smoke thank goodness.
stopped at the novo brazil brewing company in eastern chula vista (eastlake) which took over...wait for it...the old trek superstore.
incredible can/graphics game. haven't had a beer from them that rocked my world yet but, ahem, i'll keep trying.
legs not great but pushed through it. some personal records but pretty sure they're all directly attributable to the santa anas assist.

little sd metro local ride of twenty miles. windy but (still) warm. fairly quiet everywhere including the usually busy areas such as
the waterfront, little italy, balboa park, gaslamp and north park (30th st corridor). not exactly complaining about that development.

made it out to the campo area. started from the descanso hwy 79/8 fwy parking lot on the nw corner of the intersection.
lots of headwind up to guatay that wasn't in the forecast. down to pine valley and up to sunrise highway (s1). decision time...
left up sunrise highway to mt. laguna battling the (mostly) headwind up a 5-6.5% grade for 11 miles or drop down old hwy 80
to try and mitigate the winds somewhat? opted for the latter. actually had a tailwind on eastbound hwy 80 past the border patrol checkpoint
all the way to the pct crossing/boulder oaks campground. once over the little rise and down to the kitchen creek turnoff, it was a
staunch headwind. sucked it up for longer than i wanted and bailed out at the first opportunity-la posta rd. 5 (or so) glorious
tailwind miles with nearly zero traffic and then a right onto hwy 94 westbound where the (generally) tailwind good times continued for
another 7 or so miles. northbound on buckman springs rd. brought the good times to an end as it was a slog back to hwy 80.
a little respite from the wind uphill for a few miles, then easy times down to pine valley, up the 1.25 mile climb to guatay and back to the car.
a little over fifty miles. didn't see any other cyclists out. even with the winds, it was in the low/mid-70's and clear. pavement of note...
crappy shoulder (2.5 miles worth) on westbound hwy 80 from buckman springs intersection to border patrol checkpoint and the second part of the
descent into (closest half-mile to) pine valley from sunrise hwy was overly bumpy...which at 35+ mph, can present some problems. otherwise, pavement
was pretty good. supposedly, the ranchita area of san diego county is the windiest place in the county but for my money and in my experience, it's the campo area.

Just a short run down to Bolsa Chica and then the next day only to Seal Beach. I'm leaving earlier in the morning while it's still kind of cold and I'm testing out different layering options. I really want to ride more during the winter but I need to find a layering regimen that works for me.

^my socal coastal (non-raining) winter/spring experience is:

two pairs of cycling socks or one thicker pair of wool socks
full bib tights. if they have "wind panels" on the front, so much the better.
two merino wool undershirts. one short sleeve, one long sleeve. short sleeve one closest to the body.
medium/heavy weight full zip jersey.
arm warmers.
windbreaker (usually half unzipped if on the flats, fully unzipped on bigger climbs, fully zipped on bigger descents) or winter jacket (usually half unzipped).
skull cap (w/a cyclist cap in a rear pocket to swap out if it or you warm(s) up).
a neck gaiter < 50 degrees.
regular, fingerless gloves with glove liners underneath on shorter rides, full-finger gloves (with potentially glove liners) on longer rides that don't warm up.

i do better riding too warm/hot than too cold tho. there have been times i just rode fully unzipped because i was too lazy to stop and take off three layers to
peel off the inner baselayer and roll it up and tuck it into a back pocket.

It is starting to get chilly in the mornings.
I ride for fun & fitness and try to be thrifty with my bike riding spending overall.
On weekends I peddle early, I think 28 degrees was one of the lower riding temps last year, seems like lots riding in the 30's. - low 40's.
Last year I spent a fair amount of time, tried a number of things to ride and be warm enough and feel I had it mostly sorted out by end of winter except for feet.

Breathable Thermals Top and Bottom (Hanes or something)
Bicycling Pants (REI)
Breathable Long Sleeve Top w Hood (Nike)
Breathing Long Sleeve Hoodie (Under Armour)
Balaclava for Neck - Face - Head (Brand?)
Some big fuzzy gloves I got on sale at Big 5 (I could not find any bicycling gloves that fit and were warm enough, these work pretty well overall)
Some big fuzzy socks I got on sale at Big 5 (I could not find any bicycling - outdoors socks that were warm enough, these work best so far as I've found)
I had tried a number of different socks and gloves, mostly from REI.
Note that I can have 0 to 4 headcovers (Long Sleeve w Hood, Hoodie, Balaclava) + helment depending on how cold it is.
Legs and Torso might feel a bit of the cold when starting out wearing the above, but normalize a little later.
Below 30 degrees I might add one more layer to the top.
I keep things tucked and tight as possible.

It's quite a pile when set out the night before

So feet were still an issue at the end of last winter.
My shoes are Giro mountain bike shoes which have a fair amount of mesh cover.
Just last week I got some Pearl Toe covers and that didn't do it, feet still got cold towars the end of the ride, temp was low 40's.
A couple of days ago I ordered some Bontrager S2 full shoe covers (they were on sale too). I expect them in a day two and hope to try them out this weekend.
Thought about the S1 models (30 degrees +) but went with the 30 degree and below range S2s. I've found the tempature ratings on outdoor apparel hit and miss.

If the Bontrager S2 full shoe covers work well, I might be able to be a little more flexible with my sock selection.
I might revisit the big fuzzy gloves at some point, but to be honest they have worked out pretty well as far as warmth and in terms of bike handling.
Gloves to try on in the store are a problem as most are to small and I need a good fit due to a Dupuytren's Contracture issue with my hands. I don't want to order on line in case they don't fit right.

Good Luck - well prepared I find riding in the cold somewhat exciting and refreshing.

I have a 2XU Windbreak 180 Cycling Jacket that works to shield the cold wind but breathes in the back so I do not overheat. I find this sufficient with a balaclava, thermal compression top and top/bottoms, wool socks and Gore thermal gloves to handle the low 30's we sometimes have.
