All the time, money, effort, risk we put in to amateur bike racing - why?

Why do you do it?

It's winter, which I guess means there's going to be more navel-gazing around here.

1.) Contending for a win, whether for yourself or a teammate, is absolutely ****ing intoxicating and addicting.

2.) Racing/training checks boxes for socializing, exercise, and nerding out on gear.

So I can act better than everyone in the lower categories.

I also like to shave my legs and wear kids sized clothing. This accomplishes both goals while still allowing me the freedom of mall food courts and elementary schools.

Sometimes when you are a man, and you are alone in your room, you wear stretchy pants. Sometimes when you are a man and you are in public, you do the same.

I like being competitive, I've always been that way, maybe it's a youngest child thing when I felt like I had to beat the older bro/cousins. At first, my cycling goals were simply to ride further and complete a century, racing and riding faster just seemed like the logical next step. I never liked running or other exercise for the sake of doing it, health is a nice bonus, but I like trying to win (which is a loooong ways away)

Bike racing chose me, I didn't chose it.

**** I don't know. I love it, and hope to win one day (stop chuckling you ****) and love the pursuit. Sometimes I worry that if I happen to win a race, would my motivation just disappear? You need to be dedicated for this stuff. Many days I wake up, go to work, ride after, and maybe have an hour before I have to go to bed. I'm far from an outlier either. I'm tired of people saying how hard pro's work. Give one of those dudes a Cat 4's schedule and they'd quit.

As long as I can remember I've been very competitive, I've loved speed and agility, and loved the outdoors. I did gymnastics, aggressive roller blading, and all sorts of outdoor games and sports with the neighbor kids. I kind of wonder why it took me years after getting a road bike for commuting to figure out I wanted to race.

And FF, I think your more likely to want more of it once you win. Hell, even 2nds and 4ths make me want more of it.

Also racing can be fun if you are in contention to win

It's the centerpiece of my financial plan:

Step 1: Race Bike
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit

I got it from the Underpants Gnomes, so it must be a good plan.
