How in this day and age would someone not take the 2 minutes necessary to google something? Especially something as old as this with a name brand right on it.

Google search of 'old singer bike' leads you immediately to a history of Singer bikes on the CR list and also numerous BF threads, the first of which is titled 'Alex Singer, Rene Herse, et al...why the high values?'

Doesn't surprise me. I've seen people ask silly money for a Huffy or box store no-name bike because it's familiar to them so they think it must be valuable. To the uninitiated, Alex Singer sounds like a sounds-alike project by the slacker brother of the guy who made grandma's sewing machines. Means nothing to anyone who isn't a C&V fan. Which is good for C&V fans, if you can beat the recycling crusher to the goodies.

And people who'll spend hours on disinformation websites getting a fix of their daily doses of micro-outrage won't spend a minute Googling the specs for bike gear or consumer electronics, but they'll ask inane questions on Amazon. Including the size and weight when the vendor has already posted it on the ad. Because they're special so their questions must be more special than the last person who asked the same question.

Have seen other Singer's with this approx or exact color. Looks very legit to me, note the exposed brass at the lower head lug.
The chrome parts are probably toast. The brake parts sure look it. Pedals too are in trouble.
While it does not have fenders, it does have fender eyelets... the clearances are not huge, but generous.
I think it could accept fenders.
No super expensive Singer stem... but that would be chrome plated... and probably decayed as a result.
Bike deserves a rework and refitment. Aond- banish those blackwall tires... just look so Varsity.
Fine on a Varsity... Not one of these. I tease, I am sure this bike will be well taken care of.

In another forum I frequent whenever someone finds a dumpster dive, or crazy garage sale find, or whatever, the proper high approval greeting for their find is a hearty, "You Suck!"

Alex Singer has built quite a few "sportifs", basically racing bikes with fenders, no lights and a front rack just strong enough for a carton of Gauloises. This looks a lot like one.

this bike is lacking pump, top tube cable and proprietary brake braze on fittings as well as all bag and rack supports, so I am leaning on it being designed as a pure racing bike in the ‘Italian’ style as was the trend in the 1970’s. Many French producers were tweaking geometry and general styling from the ‘old’ style to more streamlined ‘Italian’ style at this time, and I suspect that this is an example of how Singer was looking at it.

I don't think your bike was built by Singer themselves. Singer didn't do top tube cable clamps, AFIK. More likely to be C.N.C. or another supplier. Which doesn't mean it is not a nice bike. Far from it. My favorite type of bike :

always possible this is a contract frame, but there are details which are way more in line with Singer, than not. The lug design, the finishing of the stay ends, the finishing and point on the seat lug and most importantly, the serial number push me in the direction of a Singer build

I do have an inquiry into the shop and am awaiting a reply.

I've found some half nice stuff at the dump here now and then, but this takes the cake for premium gerade dumpster finds!

Alcoholics also use them when they lose their driver's license, other than that bicycles have no use in modern society ;-)

Yeah, gonna second what Dfrost said. I am going to need to see this in person! The only constructeur bike I've seen in the flesh is Jan Heine's Rene Herse a couple times. It was parked out in front of Fremont restaurants here in Seattle. Locked up with a thin cable lock both times, but he had the table closest to the window. haha
