Just let my '69 Sports go to someone who needed basic transportation. I think I'm going to continue this practice. Buy up inexpensive 3 speeds for sale locally, ride 'em awhile and give them to someone who needs reliable transportation. Would love to see more of these great bikes out on the road being used.

Well the hub is an English 3 speed anyway...
A 1956 Schwinn Racer I picked up last year. I was searching for a '62 but this had cooler graphics and head badge so it came home with me. I didn't do a restoration obvivouly, just cleaned it up and gave it some TLC. Judging by the date code on the rear hub it was late '56 so maybe sold in '57. Or a Christmas bike? Who knows.
The first picture is "pre-TLC"
The "temporary" seat is too high in those photos but even so the frame is too small for me. I found a '62 frame in the next size up so I'll probably be putting another one together at some point.

I tend to go back and forth between my Schwinn bikes and my English bikes. The Schwinns have been on the back burner for a few years, but now that I've found fenders, they'll get pushed to the front of the line soon.

Yeah, and we gotta spread the gospel on how ideal these bikes are for short, flat commutes. They're perfect for getting around the city. Feel like people may have forgotten or haven't been hipped.

@ascherer, you will want to replace the twist shift. It’s pretty bad. I had one on my 1967 Hercules.
@thumpism, $250 is dirt cheap for a tourist here in NYC. A Sports in good condition is $400-500. A Tourist is more.

This Allegro looks a lot like my Swiss Condor. It's a $50 bargain in DC.

An excellent Sports here in Ontario might grab $300, most go for $100-$150. I sold a very nice Tourist for just over $400 last year. Guess we need to get these bikes to NYC! Sold this 71 Robin Hood Dropbar for just over $300 this spring. It was sold with a B17, I kept the B67 for my 72 Raleigh Sports.

15 miles or so, pretty much all hills around here. The Lenton has a 22 tooth rear cog and handles hills pretty well.

That's encouraging, because, for the very first time, I put a freewheel with a 22T low sprocket on one of my racing bikes (Moser), and am about to see how I handle fifty gear inches. Did you buy the Lenton with that low rear sprocket?

It came with the stock 18-tooth rear. It has the stock 48-tooth front bolt-on type chainring. I put the 22 on when I rebuilt the bike. I like the 22 tooth cogs enough that I don't even bother with the 18s anymore. I'm also not pushing hard downhill, so I want two climber type gears and use the high gear for flats and downhill. If you're someone who feels the need to push hard downhill to max out your speed, you'll probably spin-out on the 22 tooth. I use the downhill to somewhat recover from climbing the hills we have around here.

No! I forgot about that ad. I've never even had a nibble on that. No, our financial crisis is over, and I am gainfully employed again. I'm at work now, in fact, and FB is blocked on our server, so I'll have to try to remember to take that down when I get home. Thanks for the heads-up!

The clamp on water cage is nothing special. I had a bag of the flat straps from an old bike shop and carefully bent them to match a generic EVO alloy cage. It did work well over the years.

Sixty-Fiver you (with this thread) launched me into a five year C&V adventure - thank you for that. After reading through the first few hundred pages of this thread several years ago, found my first classic bike - a 1950 Raleigh Superbe (now owned by another member here), and my wife took up riding a '56 Sports:

Then another old three-speed showed up (a 1960s Triumph):

My keeper is a '51 Sun Wasp Massed Start with a Sturmey FM in the rear (courtesy of clubman) and a '46 GH6 up front powering modern B&M lamps. I was just out on it last night - tons of fun.
