And then there was Manson, feral mother of three kittens who lived under the bicycle shop at my old house in Montpelier (that's two of her three kittens behind her). They showed up in July 2010, lived with me until June 2014 when we sold the house and moved into the suburbs. By this point she and her one remaining son had become quite domesticated, with her sleeping with me at night (until 0500 when she insisted on being let outside). I was worried that she couldn't adapt to the suburbs, so she and her remaining son were given away to a friend who gave them a comfortable life as barn cats.

The part that hurt was later realizing that the suburb I moved into was laid back enough that she would have adapted very easily. She got her name because those green eyes gave her the look of Charles Manson on the cover of the hardbound edition of "Helter Skelter".

And when I said they lived under (and often, in) the bike shop, I wasn't kidding. That's Squeak in the front (unfortunately killed by a car on our road about a month after they went thru TNR). Fluff and Cringe in the middle, Manson at the rear. At this point she wasn't all that keen on coming into the shop. Yet.

I have put off even opening this thread since returning here to BF/C&V. We lost Carl in February, his kidneys failed and he developed congestive heart failure. He remained my constant friend and companion until the very last moment. A lovable guy that ruled the house with a benevolent smirk and tail twitch.

I feel like a huge hole exists in my soul since that last moment, I sometimes feel he should be sauntering in to issue orders and then grabbing a few naps before having a snack. I miss you Carl Q Cat. BTW, the Q stood for CUTE, and his motto was, “If one didn’t saunter when one could saunter, one never would saunter. Saunter on little buddy.

@qcpmsame Carl was surely a handsome critter, and sounds like he was absolute purrrfect buddy. He’s exhibiting some cat proper box sitting there! He must be dearly missed. Thank you for finally coming around to share him here

We lost our Maya to kidney failure a couple of days ago. She was 14 and a rescue from my wife's work, one of 3 kitten sisters. We also lost Mirna just over a year ago, also to kidney failure. We still have the third one, Princess, a gray tabby, where the others were tortoise shell calico. Sad day when you lose them.

Maya, 14 years.

Maya and Mirna, both gone.

Mirna, Princess, still hanging in there, and Maya.

Thanks much, he was a great friend and companion. Many hours of time in the garage with him supervising and napping were always a good time. He liked to perch on anything we were working on or reading. I always felt he exemplified the thought: The Egyptians considered cats to be royalty and deity. Cats have never forgotten this.

Thanks for the kind words. Sorry for your loss of Carl. They can be great friends. Maya was really my wife's cat, more than mine (Maya's choice). If anything happened to my little buddy Tigger, I don't know what I'd do. He disappeared for 4 days once, and I cried when he showed up again. He was like, "What?". He's 9 now and stays a closer to home, gives him more time to supervise bike repairs.

Tigger doesn't do thunder storms.

^^^^ Okay, so do any of you "feel" the equivalent of the above? For instance, you're lying in bed, and you feel like the mattress is depressing a little, just like when a cat jumps on. You look to see if it's one of your "present" cats, and there's no one to be seen. I swear this happens to me now and then, and we've said goodbye (well, "see you again") to several cats over the years, so I just gotta think it's one of them, checking up on things over in this dimension. Weirdest feeling.

not specifically. but I can swear that occasionally after letting 1 or more cats outside & shutting the door. 1 of them appears inside the door a little while later, even tho I have absolutely no memory of letting any of them back in. & it's just sitting there, just inside the door. calm as can be

not sure of this is related. my last cat was a skinny, long haired, black cat (had for 20 yrs) & dripped from her mouth a lot when it jumped on my bed for petting & purring. I now have another skinny, long haired, black cat & it also drips from her mouth a lot when it jumps on my bed for petting & purring. sometimes, I think the old one was reincarnated into this one, partly because I was away on a retreat, when that old one passed away

A few weeks after Carl was euthanized, the veterinarian's office sent us a condolence card with notes from the entire staff expressing their condolences to us. They had made paw prints from Carl's front feet and written a note on them. That card and the paw prints will never leave us.

When I took the picture it was kind of amusing - Exhibit A, proof that she had hopped onto the table to munch on some flowers. Now it’s poignant.
