What do you use to get in the mood to bike?

I mean, on some mornings, when otherwise you would not be biking.

I wake up to rap from my iPod. And, I have only been taking it on longer 2+ hour rides.

Being alive...

If anything I'd pop on some Lucas Brunelle videos or Youtube for a few minutes on bike videos. That usually gets me all riled up

Knowing that I sit on my arse for 8 hours and pound out code at work Monday through Friday is enough motivation for me. Plus, the only time I'm able to get out on the bike these days is going to work and back.

The first few miles on the bike are what I use to get in the mood for biking. Once your past those it's a blast.

Eh? Motivation? I need *not* motivation to ride to work sometimes so I can run various non-bike compatible errands.

My motivation is the sheer pleasure and the challenge I get everyday I ride. I have a longer than average commute (according to the polls we had here last month :-D) and challenges are different everyday. It's often the weather, my personal fitness, my goals etc. Challenge of riding on a hot day, challenge on riding on super cold mornings with hot afternoons (it's the case right now!!), challenge of riding as fast as possible, challenge of riding as slow as is needed to complete a week of commute without taking the car. I haven't succeeded yet because I ride too hard and I get tired so this is my goal for this week!

After that it will start getting colder and colder and it will start to rain often. My challenge will be to keep doing it; then its winter. We'll see what comes next! No ride is the same ever; isn't that exciting?

My motivation is to not be unreasonable in how many times I have to ride per week. I'd like to ride like 5/6 times. But other life events get in the way. I come up with redicilious excuses to ride further than necessary. I'll ride to a town 15 miles further to buy something just because it is 20 cents less. I'll go to any extreme to use a bike rather than a car for completing errands.

I throw $0.15/mile into my 'bike fund' jar. The more I ride, the more toys I can buy.

Hey, nice idea! It's not like I need it for motivation, but I'd love to spend money on cycling without feeling guilty.

As for motivation... let's say I'm bummed if for whatever reason I cannot ride. Fortunately, it happens pretty rarely.

The motivation is almost always there. It's the extra incentive of having that jar of change to spend on bike parts which makes things even better. I just got a new cassette and stem for my road bike resto project, and I ordered a 6-packer front rack for my commuter. (I'm gonna use it to mount my headlight, and I think it looks about the right size, 6" x 9", for carrying my tent and sleeping bag in compression sacks.)

I remember that it's always better once I am out on the bike.

On the rare days that it turns out that it isn't, I know to take it easy because I may be coming down with something or know that it's time to give myself some rest days.

Like others here (oboeguy) I need less motivation. I come up with all kinds of excuses to wake up earlier than I need to to start my commute and all kinds of excuses (and convoluted plans) to ride every day, even though sometimes I'd be better off to drive my car.

I wake up at 5:45a to cycle to work. When I stopped cycle commuting and motored to work for 7wks I found myself staying in bed until the last minute (7:30a) and getting to work a bit late. Then there was much less motivation.

There are no mornings when I would not otherwise be biking. I just need to think of how much driving my car sucks (not that there's anything wrong with the car, just driving is so much less than cycling).

There is no motivation required. It is just what I do. I don't give riding a second thought other than to consider what to wear based on the weather. Riding is as much a part of my morning habit as going to work or getting dressed.
In my case I try to make every excuse possible to ride to work even if it would be better to drive.
If the car needs taken to the shop I make sure I leave it for the day at a shop near home so I can ride from there.
If I have to drop my daughter off at day care (my wife usually does this as it is very near her work) I will drop her off then drive home to get my bike or take my bike with me and ride from there.
I let very few things keep me from my daily ride.

Now, THIS I sometimes need motivation for. Any tips? The temptation to just hit the waterfront trail instead of heading to work is just so great sometimes...

My motivation? Being able to zip by all the cars stuck in traffic.
