oh, absolutely.
40 is 4 more than 36, so that must be at least 10% stronger!

the 4 extra spokes that don't have matching holes in your 36-hole hub can be woven into the other 36 spokes to provide both strength and a pleasing decorative braided steel expression of your creativity and serve as a conduit to world peace.
