That was a disaster, when you have a very thin spot like that and the rest of the tube is thick, any stresses are only applied to the thin spot, as that is the only spot that can flex, stresses are concentrated there. And the valve stem where it was bonded to the tube came loose from the stem. We had stopped to chat for a minute, and suddenly I hear this psssssssssssssssssssssst noise, and that was when my rear wheel went flat.
.
I suspect this was the issue, plus I think that she rides with low pressures sometimes, as possibly did the first owners, cuz it was pretty apparent that back and forth movement did a good job of ripping the stem area in a very distinct circle of where the stem was. The other weird thing is that the valve was threaded into the rim, something I had never seen, so solidly in there, which probably increased the stresses put onto the rubber around the stem if the tube shifted under low pressure. I still dont understand how they put the tube in if the stem had to be threaded into the rim hole...dont get it. The presta valve spare tube I had went through the rim hole like normal, ie so a normal size rim hole.....weird.

As of 2 days ago, I now have a new tubeless 44mm Snoqualmie Pass Endurance on the back wheel (practically automounted), and a tubed Barlow Pass EL on the front. I'm going to hedge my bets and put sealant in the front tube.
