Has very little to do with how interesting the conversations are, as long as they happen.

I ride with several Vegas Metro officers. They are all Glock fans. The 19 seems to be a popular option to carry in the middle pocket of their cycling jerseys.
I do think that 50+ riders are a unique group who need very little moderation. At our age we don't appreciate a lot of managing. And I am a moderator, well, they trust me with a star anyway.

I'd like to ignore the dogs and move on to the humans who let the dogs run loose and defecate all over the yards and sidewalks up here in the Highlands

I'm sorry to interrupt, but I can't allow this to slip by uncontested. I'll have you know that the moderation team relies heavily on members reporting problem threads. Some threads get out of hand. Some members get out of hand. The moderation team can't be everywhere at the same time. We have a very limited staff that tries to keep track of a very large group of forums and scores, maybe hundreds of active threads. There is no way on earth we could cover all these threads without the help of the members.
This is an unpaid, volunteer position. We have personal lives outside this forum - jobs, families to raise, bills to pay, social activities, even an occasional bike ride. Speaking for most of us, we don't do this because we like bossing people around. And speaking for myself, I do this as my contribution to trying to keep this enjoyable and valuable forum an enjoyable and valuable forum. I just like to help keep it on track. So I hope you're not trying to discourage reporting, because that is absolutely essential in keeping this forum on track. We don't ask everyone to give up their time to help moderate this place. But we are extremely grateful when regular members help out by reporting stuff. And it may be too rigid an axiom to apply everywhere, but the general idea holds true - if you're not part of the solution, maybe you are part of the problem.
Thanks for listening.

just to amplify what Billy said, I'm here because I like the forum. They asked me to moderate and I try to do the best I can, but I'm here because I like to participate on the forum. I always liked the 50+ forum, but I can only spend so much time online. A majority of the mods are 50+
The threads that get moved are mainly in 4 categories that always cause problems. Roughly speaking, firearms, politics, helmets and Advocacy and Safety. These are highly contentious subjects, and moving them to the appropriate forum is a given.

The fact that the OP is one of the people helping to derail his own thread by continuing the firearm talk pretty much shows why moderation in 50+ isn't going away.

I know I'm fairly new here, but here it goes.
Every forum I've been a member has had this same topic come up...Repeatedly. They're private forums, and the owners can do as they see fit. Whenever I see a thread moved, I shrug my shoulders, wonder why, and move on. If it gets too heavy handed I move on.
As far as the moderators go, like BillyD said, they're volunteers, and believe me it's a thankless task. I've spent some time moderating a political forum, and I learned from that nobody is ever going to be happy all the time.
That stint made my 5 yrs of coaching teenage girls soccer look like a cake walk.

The topic of firearms was deliberately introduced to get a reaction from the moderators; it has nothing to do with the topic of the thread.
The fact that the OP is one of the people helping to derail his own thread by continuing the firearm talk pretty much shows why moderation in 50+ isn't going away.

Now I'm off to a Ducati rally in NC. Ride well. Be safe.

The first thing Hitler did after he took everyone's guns away was to not allow anyone to post in the 50+ forum! Look how that turned out! Now we can't talk about *****exual abortion 'cause some petty out of control moderator tyrant says it's "off-topic". I bet his birth certificate is faked too! Wake up sheeple! This is the first step toward socialist islamofacist anarcho-syndicalist communism!
Oh, and I want a refund.

The sad thing is that a lot of the people here are forgetting the 50+ forum description
Fifty Plus (50+)
Share the victories, challenges, successes and special concerns of bicyclists 50 and older. Especially useful for those entering or reentering bicycling.
We understand that there are other issues that may pertain only to those who are in this age bracket and we all due respect we try to keep it here - that is why we don't really mind when those issues come up. But when it's a topic that tends to spiral into debates, arguments or turns into an internet bloodfest, that is when it gets cleaned up or moved to where it might be in the right atmosphere. We have had many m many complaints that it is sometimes hard to find threads pertaining to 50+ CYCLING on here. We have been questioned the same exact thing: "Why does 50+ cycling exist if there is no cycling content?" One of our members here has often fought us in regards to our actions of moving things. This person felt that we should never move anything out of here. We tried that. We did that for what... two years? And then that's when we started to lose members. They were frustrated. They asked us why we allowed this. They asked where the cycling content was. They didn't want to hear about people's personal issues in regards to not getting along with neighbors...with what kind of pies their wife made...
I had even asked if we should just change the name of this place to not include cycling. Boy did I get a lot of PMs asking me not to.
It's tough. I'd like to please everyone here, but I can't. We are up in arms here. I'm getting it from both sides.
