Getting Back into riding - Ohio

Hey Everyone, Used to ride more a few years back but have gotten the bug again. Goal this summer is to ride the RAIN (ride across IN) 160 miles. I did it back it 2006 and it was a killer. Headwind all the way and hot. I have a Trek SL6 Pro. Have done a little riding this year. Road from Vandalia to Richmond IN last Saturday for 70 miles at 17.3 avg mph. Richard

Welcome to the site. You live in a great biking friendly state. I've done a good amount of riding up in NE Ohio. And did GOBA last year.

Cool, I did it in 2006 in 10:42. We spent to much time off the bike at the rest stops so I have a goal to do it in under 10 hours this year. How fast do you normally run?

I have ridden the bike path down to Dayton, but usually ride the northern area up in to Miami County where there is not as much traffic. I'm on Strava (Richard Herbst) if you want to see some of my routes. My son also set up a Strava accout for himself and his name is Richard Herbst, so it can be confusing...

Welcome. You must stay in good shape to pick up cycling again and do 70 miles at a good pace.

I try to run a couple of times a week. Problem with that is that my legs are not as strong as I would like. Guess that means I just have to train harder and it will come.

My son and I did the 70 mile Richmond ride again yesterday and it was brutal. When we made the turn in Richmond we were going into 15-20 mph head winds. It was a real struggle for 35 solid mile. I just kept telling myself that it was making me stronger.

new old rider

welcome. I too am getting back to commuting after some 30 years. Makes me fit and I try to ride like I used to but sadly my flexibility isn't what it used to be and can barely mount my old freschi LOL

Welcome from the south west side of Ohio.

Have you ridden the bike paths around here? They go for a surprisingly long distance!
