Back then I'm pretty sure I remembered something in Winning magazine that said LeMond would start off his season on a heavy bike (steel) and move to something lighter as his fitness improved. When he was on the Gan team he rode a LeMond-branded titanium frame.

Perhaps in the big picture. But as an American teenage boy who was just getting into cycling in the 80s, I thought Lemond's magical comeback was very cool. Plus, Lemond is not a confessed doper, and never had to leave a major tour while in the leader's jersey because of a failed drug test.

As far as Greg riding different frame materials in the same race, I remember reading in ~1991 or so that he would start out in the Spring on steel, then as fitness progressed he'd move to titanium and finally carbon. Given his rapid comeback in 1989, he seems to have done something similar within that year's Tour.

Great thread!. My fantasy bike collection includes a 1989 Team ADR Bottecchia. I can enjoy this Team ADR livery Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra from 1988;

Another rebadged bike Lemond rode in TdF was a Carbonframes produced by Craig Calfee (www.calfeedesign.com).
Kinda like this one. (edit: frame only, no Campy10 in '91)
For a short time, Calfee produced the Carbonframes bike under contract as a Lemond branded frame - for sale to the public.

The Man won one tour while racing against most of his own freaking team (Slaying the Badger) and one with bird shot pellets still in his body, and oh by the way won a world championship after being shot too. That is MEGA cool.

I have a collection of MAVIC parts as well as a couple of red,pink and violet Avocet computers and other parts in the hopes of re-creating Lemonds Tour bike,now only if if I can find one of those red and white Bottechia Frames. My buddy has one but I highly doubt he will surrender it without a fight.

C'mon, everyone knows Greg is God. And he was the one with balls enough to call out that mega-doper Armstrong when everyone else was on the ship sailing down the river Denial.

Only the Revenge Factor makes him a flawed god. Nobody's perfect though, so I'm a fan-boy. Bought my first yellow jersey, Fall 1986 - not a TdF jersey, just a yellow long sleeve one that wasn't far off the correct shade. Still own it and occasionally wear it.

LeMond has a flawed personality. He was, nevertheless, the reason why I bought my Bottecchia. It wascool to see an American do well in a European event like the TdF.

I haven't read about Greg's childhood and pre-racing years, but rumor had it his Dad, who ran much of Lemond Cycles, was a bit difficult to deal with. Lemond Cycles had many, many different builders for their bikes, not all the changes were for advanced technology, though many were.

The red/white Bottecchia was v. much 100% + a (Carnielli) Bottecchia built in Vittorio Veneto. Very few Americans ever realized the beyond exceptional design of Carnielli and the absolute superiority of the frame/bike. Nothing ever better, period.

LeMond's '89 Bottecchia
Sorry it has taken me so long to discover this forum in general and to read through the thread about LeMond's '89 TdF bike. Since I am the owner of the bike that is on display at the Three Oaks, MI bike museum (a must-see museum in a nice little town), I thought I could share some of what I know about the Botticchia on display and the '89 TdF. LeMond raced 5 different bikes in that tour: 2 steel framed red Botticchias, 2 carbon fiber yellow bikes that were re-branded as Botticchias (the team sponsor) and the time trial Bottecchia he rode to win the tour by 8 seconds on the final day. I believe after the tour that year, Greg gave one of the red steel bikes to his trainer, Otto. Otto in turn sold it to a pro baseball player in California, who later sold it to another bike enthusiast who eventually wanted to liquidate to start a new adventure. He advertised it in the classifieds in VeloNews where I saw the add, negotiated a price and (nervously) had it shipped to me in Northwest Indiana. When it arrived, I pumped up the tubular tires, rode it down our circular driveway, turned right on our street then right again at the other end of our driveway and back to where I started, never to be ridden again. The bike has been on display in my basement first then two local bike shops before landing in the Three Oaks bike Museum where it receives the most exposure. When the bike arrived there was no bike computer, but I found one in red like it showed in photos. I also added a bottle cage and a couple of red bottles. Yes, I know the bottle cages don't match yet. The red one should be replaced. The race number was also gone so I laminated one I made up to look like the original. It's not pictured. No other modifications were made to the bike as it came to me. I trust the documentation I have that verifies the authenticity of the bike. I have always wondered what happened to the '89 TT bike. Wouldn't that be a nice addition to a bike collection?

Thanks. I spent a long time thinking about whether I wanted to keep the bike's original Campy or to upgrade to a more modern set up. When I saw the Athena groupset in the silver finish I knew it would be a the right upgrade.
Interesting, the Mavic hubs on the Lemond bike are the same hubs my Bottecchia originally had. I think that Mavic may have been one of the sponsors of Lemond's team.
By the way, how is your Wilier doing? It continues to receive great press reviews.
