Headed back the Blue Mountain Reservation in Northern Westchester NY today for a quick ride before I had to do some real work. Now that I'm getting more comfortable, it's a great place to work on getting comfortable with some steeper, rocky, rooted climbs and descents. The doubletrack trails are definitely doable on a gravel bike with some practice.
I've switched over to tubeless 40mm Maxxis Ramblers and went up to a 40 tooth rear cassette. Also testing out now a handlebar bag handles rougher trails as I'll need to have some extra storage for the D2R2 that I'm working up to.

Wow, not being here on the forums in awhile I missed out on some really great threads, including this one. I just spent 1/2 hour looking at all the lovely pics in this thread, and it reminds me of how many beautiful places there are in this world. I love gravel riding, it brings back great memories of the rural farming community in which I grew up, in the Catskills of NYS. I've been spending the last five years identifying and riding all the dirt roads I can find from that area. Here are some photo's I've taking from around there.

Nice Catskills shots... and Those red clay Georgia shots brings back some memories...
I had a cold the past couple of days, but made myself get out to get a few miles in on the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail. Another decent bit of bike-able dirt trail about an hour north of NYC.

Yes, the Delaware Canal Towpath is on the PA side and the Delaware and Raritan Canal Trail is on the NJ side. Both sides are almost completely flat (as far as I rode it from Morrisville to New Hope and back).

Was coming out of a downhill and did a synchro-shift downgear....heard a terrible noise and came to a stop fast...fortunately I was on gravel and stopped quick otherwise the wheel would have failed.
Already ordered a new RD ($169), new hangerx2 ($34)....and need to price out a wheel rebuild (with a new hub).
A lovely 17mile ride...final cost $200+USD.

Good lord- $170 for a rear derailleur? Is it gold plated? An ultegra is something like $50, right?

Free hub already has bite, and the spokes were damaged...and bitex doesn't make a better harder free hub...so off to find a better hub

So I mentioned in May that I had some business on the other side of a bridge that I needed to get around to. Today was the day.
I didn't set out in the direction of the bridge, though; it's not the important bit, and coming at it from the other side works just as well. Starting my ride, I left southbound out of Darrington on Washington's Mountain Loop Highway.
Mountain Loop Highway starts out paved:
Around 8.5 miles in, Mountain Loop Highway stops being paved. And the gravel portion of Mountain Loop is very beautiful. However, while I did see the "pavement ends" sign on the highway, I did not ride any of that gravel. Because at the same spot is a left turn onto another unpaved option: National Forest Road NF-23, also known as White Chuck Road:
Which I took, because White Chuck Mountain was the object of my circumnavigation today:
After traveling farther east along NF-23, here's a view of White Chuck Mountain from the Southeast, with the White Chuck River below:
While NF-23 has lots of potholes, for the most part it's a reasonably chill gravel road. But eventually, it swerves north, looks skyward, and becomes NF-27. NF-27 carves a path up through the hills behind White Chuck Mountain, over to the Suiattle River valley.
It's only around 3 miles to the top, but the grade averages nearly 9%, and the surface is rocky and loose. My 24T chainring came in handy.
NF-27 is currently listed as impassable because of a washout, and there were barriers across enough of the road to block motor vehicles from approaching the spot. But without any explicit road closure signage, I figured I'd keep going.
You get a very exciting view at the top: a level, quality road surface:
But, the important bit.
The top of NF-27 is Rat Trap Pass.
So... here's some Rat Trap Pass on Rat Trap Pass.

It's the original stem from a 1991 Bridgestone RB-T, which according to the catalog is an SR MTS-301.
