Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Chafing

I've been having probs with chafing right where my leg meets my crotch (more on the left than the right). I lube it up real good before heading out but around 30-35 miles it can get pretty sore. trying to think if i should try a narrower seat or better bibs? My bibs are all kind of mid range about $125-150 or so several different brands, current saddle SMP hell saddle.

At 30-35 miles is awfully early. Are you using chamois butter of any kind? Body Glide?

Sometimes skin bacteria composition gets out of whack.

You might try mineral stick deodorant, and/or witch hazel or other skin cleaner to reset.

Also consider what you eat- can be a factor in skin issues, & make sure that bibs & saddle get really clean.

Kudos for correct spelling of 'chafing'.

I try not to think about other peoples’ crotches, but if it were mine, I would look for a piece of chamois bunching up, not having my chamois pulled up all the way and and seated properly on one side, or sitting on my saddle crooked. All of the above have caused me chafing issues at one time or another. Have you inspected your chamois for asymmetric wear or bunching?

I'm using gooch guard currently, I used to use bag balm but didn't like how it left my chamois greasy even after washing, maybe that leftover greasy is part of the prob?

I'll have to do some inspection

May need to slightly adjust the saddle nose to the left or right too.

I chafe right where the OP chafes. Body Glide prevents it.

Just about every triathlete on the planet uses body glide.

I've had this happen with a poor seat fit, usually you are sitting on too narrow of a saddle or too narrow portion of the saddle so applying excess pressure at that intersection. No amount of lube is going to fix this long term

Had problems regardless of seat until I switched to high end bibs(assos) and started using chamois cream on any ride but commutes. It could be 4 things, saddle, bike fit, not using chamois cream, or the bibs...I would relook at your fit and see if your seat is to high, then try chamois cream of your not already, then high end bibs, then last saddle change.

Having to use chamois cream for a 2 hour ride?

I'd keep working on it.

that's interesting, I was thinking maybe my saddle was to wide, but what you said makes sense.

usually too wide chafes on the thigh or butt cheek lol. But if it's too wide in the rear it may push you forward onto the narrower part

Some pictures may be beneficial in identifying the culprit. 🤣

All joking aside, I recently had the same issue. The problem stemmed from me pulling my bibs at the hem while standing and stretching, prepping for the ride. I would never pull them back up and make sure the padding was seated in the right place before mounting the bike . The inseam where the chamois joins my bibs would work it's way to the crotch/inner thigh crease and cause miserable discomfort.
That's where I'd start looking for answers . Keep the area clean and dry when not riding and well lubed when on the bike till it heals.
