Paul Sherwen successor

Does anyone know who is calling the Tour Down Under on NBC Sports? I’m just wondering who will take Paul Sherwen's place.

No idea, but I would love to see Phil and Bob Roll team up. Or Lemond, Hampsten, Boardman, or anyone with pro racing experience who speaks English and is reasonably articulate. Phil seems to do most of the talking anyway. Maybe they can try out some different people this season and see who "clicks" (and will work the cheapest).

Thank you for posting this, it truly made my evening. The overpass thing at the end brought a tear to my eye.

I dare anyone to watch this and not walk away with massive respect for both of these guys (as well as Paul, RIP).

The Climber

i never knew that Paul had this nickname. I thought you would enjoy the podcast as much as I did. So much to learn about what really goes on in the Peloton.

Yeah, thanks again, for posting the link.

I used to wonder whether guys like Bob Roll or Lance ever posted here. But after listening to these guys talk to each other, I now realize that their level of knowledge, expertise, and first-hand experience at the highest levels of the sport puts them miles above the kind of petty bickering, uniformed knee jerk reactions, and provincial attitudes you see on display here with appalling regularity. I no longer wonder about such things.

You are welcome

I have watched the tour over the years but I had no idea what really went on behind the scene. The Lance podcasts give us some of the background information on how it all works.

Thanks! Lance podcasts are great. The one's during the Tour last year had me glued to the TV for hours.

I have been watching some older Tour de France coverage lately, featuring Phil and Paul. One thing that became obvious to me almost immediately, were the number of early stages that feature sprint finishes. There are leadouts, crashes, lead changes, surges, guys who fade and others who get stronger near the finish. The action is fast and furious.I think it takes a unique talent to be able to think and talk fast enough to keep up with the action. I can’t imagine a fairly laid-back guy like Lemond, Roll, or Hampsten keeping up with all of this. You need a really fast talker, someone like Stephen Roche or Robby McEwen for a stage like that, things are happening way too fast for a person who talks at normal speed.

The other thing I noticed is how well Phil and Paul worked together, their narration was like a complicated dance, where the participants need to work seamlessly together, especially during sprint finishes. Paul’s complete lack of ego served him well here. But they made it look so easy. All us TV viewers ever notice is the awkward stuff like Phil comparing Valverde to King Tut, as we roll our eyes and think “How stupid. I could do this.” But in reality, I doubt any of us ever could.

It’s gonna take a very special person to step into Paul’s shoes, no doubt about it. I’m almost afraid to state the obvious, but I think Lance should be seriously considered, at least for some color commentary. Since he can never race again due to a lifetime ban, what else is he gonna do?

Liggett is having his annual trip to Adelaide to call the Tour Down Under for TV and now his co-commentator will be Australian cycling great Robbie McEwen.

It remains unclear who will commentate alongside Liggett at the Tour de France for American TV.

Maybe they'll go with a 3 man booth? Bob Rolle and Christian VDW really get into some good disagreements and are generally pretty entertaining together. But would Phil get lost between them? And who replaces them in the color reporting bits they do?

There's really no obvious replacement here. Phil and Paul really brought an old school classiness to the sport that is unfortunately becoming rare in sports broadcasting.

Been watching the TDU with McEwen on board and they seem to all blend in together. I also think it will be CVDV in the other tours.

Been watching the Australian Tour and realizing how much I don't care for Jens Voigt. Not sure why, but I find his accent hard to understand at times and just don't care for his style. I appreciate what he's done in the peloton, but just don't find that he really brings anything to the party. I sure wouldn't want to hear him in the booth.

Phil and Robbie are doing a great job, I think. Don't know the logistics but I assume Robbie won't or can't do the TdF. No way Jens will be calling it with Phil - too hard to understand.
