The Hirame is a great thing. It seem though, that a number of people have been having trouble with them. I've had mine for six or seven years now and still on the first set of washers/o-rings. I think the trouble (as in many such things) is due to "pilot error"- I'm guessing that people are over-tightening the clamp, then when it doesn't get a good seal, tightening it more and more until the housing is warped, rendering it useless. You DO NOT have to have these things super tight!

Also, to work on a Zipp disc, I had to *carefully* scallop-out one side of the valve hole a little bit with a dremel for it to fit on easily. If anyone is interested I can post a pic of this.

Edit: Advice for Hirame users- Do not lend it out to people who don't know how to use this pump chuck. They will screw it up. If you must lend it, help them.

I did this for my Zipp 900 disc as well. And the guy I bought my Mavic Comete disc had done similar to that disc.

What's the difference between screwing it up and doing it right?

As i said above, I think people tend to over-tighten the barrel adjuster, sometimes to the point of ruining the chuck. It only needs to be *just so* tight.

The Hirame is the best one so far, but I've had good luck with the silca adapter as well, and no dremelling required.

In my case the Zipp is a 909 and the tire is a Vittoria Evo and the air valve is just too long. Now had I realized this or the bike shop I could have perhaps used a diffrent length valve (IF THAT IS POSSIBLE) or a tire with a shorter valve. Now all is glued up so I am weighing my options. I was able to pump it up today by taking my silca apart , slip it on in two parts and tighten. A pain, but doable. The dremel makes sense to me as this is not a new wheel so warranty is a non issue, but at the track last night a few riders have done the same.

Yup, the Vittorias have long valves. There's nothing you can do but use a different tire. The mechanic could/should have noticed this during the tire stretching process (before gluing).

The only solution is to pull that tire and use it for something else and get a new tire for your disc.

Would the other option be to still grind a bit into the Wheel opening as stated earlier?

How much room do you have from the tip of the valve to the end of the access hole? The Silca 90 is less voluminous than the Hirame, it sits lower on the valve stem, and doesn't have as much on top, so you might be able to wrangle it on.

Okay, so I agree with you but I supplied the tire so I take some responsibility.
I did manage to pump the tire up by using the silca pipe and taking it apart and slipping each piece on gently. A great solution no, but it did work as instructed by the shop.

In anycase the options are
a) Grind some wall out, The opening is 40mm, the CLOSED stem is 35mm. I figure I need 5-10mm to fit it in without a hassle, most likely closer to 10mm.
b) Pull tire and replace with another using a shorter stem. Unsure which one as I race mostly on Asphalt & concrete Kissena & Trexlertown, Rock hill for Masters, Nothing indoors

Stuff happens and the tire will be used by me on my 404's when I need them replaced.

Grind it, then put on whatever tire you like.

So, I bought a set of second hand mavic ellipse off the interwebs the other week. Yesterday I got them and went to put them on the bike to find the wheel nut on one side is stuck on because the end of the axle is cracked and flared out slightly. I contacted the guy I bought them off and he apologized profusely, saying he didn't know and that he'll try source a new axle for me. I've looked online and found. A few places that sell them from between $30aud to $50aud. But does anyone know if there is any difference between the first gen axle and the second gen axle. My set are first gen but I'd guess anything I find online would be for 2nd gen. Unless they're identical.

Depending on the extent of the damage you (or a local machine shop) might be able to rework the axle.

Huskey, if you don't get an answer here, consider asking in Bike Mechanics being that a lot of the folks over there deal with similar small-parts issues daily.

the mavic tech site only has current ellipse and '05 ellipse tech info, but both use the same axle part numbers.

Hard decision :-)

I thinking to get one of these:
[1] Argon 18 Electron
The Electron is the real deal, a track frameset for all events: Matched Sprints, Points or Madison racing.

[2] Guerciotti Crux Track
Guerciotti - Bikes - Track and Chrono bikes - Crux Track - 03

I need it for track training.
My level: beginner

What would you suggest?

Both shoul be around 1000 euro in Europe. Argon is not easily available here so I would need to go for a frame and then get the rest of the stuff separately, so I might end up spending more.
