Worth it to convert?

Do you guys think its worth it to convert this to a townie? The frame is in nice condition, but the wheels and cranks needs to go. I got it for free and just fell in love with the electroforged frame and the color..

I don't think it's a good idea becuase you can tell by the welds that it is heavy and cranks and wheels are pretty expensive.

Buy a new bike. Old **** breaks. after going through like 3 frames and striping and/or breaking just about everything possible i decided it's much more logical and cost efficient to buy a new bike.

Negative, unless you can get the parts SUPER cheap or free (like from a co-op)
27 wheels
Welded heavy frame
Front dropouts will require filing (widening)
Seatpost is probably non-standard size
new crank & bb needed
New headset prob needed
Bars are steel
new saddle, brakes

Shine it up, sell it and use the money for a new bike or a better choice for conversion.

bum bars, wheel true, new tires and tubes, drivetrain degrease, polish, lube, and a set of fenders... it'll BE a townie.

Clean it, sell it, find a better frame. I can attest to how ****ing heavy these things are. For some reason I can't stand the way they look and you can find better frames for about the same price as you can get if you sell this.

The Classic and Vintage forum would love to see a restored Continental. Basically a Varsity frame so it's heavy and the components aren't the greatest. But if you play polo, this would be a great bike for it.

Ashtabula cranks are very strong.

And very heavy.

Easy enough to convert but I wouldn't bother unless you've got an unused crankset just lying around.

why not, its not a bad bike, these guys are talking about it being heavy and old? well guess what? it'll out last any newer bike that anyone on this forum owns, and its not like your going to race the ****ing bike! you're building a townie! so who give a **** if its a bit heavy? once you change out the steel ashtabula crank and steel wheels you'll be fine. BTW, I've never seen a vintage Schwinn frame crack under normal use. Here's a sweet little number I built for a friend a while ago, still on the street and running strong!

Before sinking a bunch of money, I would tear it down and hand polish all the parts. Some of the old components can be brought back to an amazing luster. Good time to repack bearings and really evaluate where you're at with the bike.

That too. It would take me about an hour....maybe two, to get that thing looking almost new.

Which schwinn is that?; that frame is long! I can imagine your friend has virtually no problems with overlap...

I forget what model it was, but it only looks long due to it being a smaller (49-51cm) frame.
