Painting machined sidewalls?
I have an older Hed carbon tubular, from when they still had aluminum rims and a carbon fairing. I'm using it for a track bike, so I'd like to paint the machined sidewalls black. Has anyone done this before? I'd like to know what kind of paint would work well.

Aluminum takes paint very nicely. Sand and/or use solvent to get it to clean bare metal. Mask off the disc area and spray away. If you're not sure what paint to buy, ask for one made for cast aluminum outdoor furniture.

Aluminum does require an etching primer or an acid etch prep (Jasco Metal-Prep at Home Depot or Lowe's) if you would like the paint to adhere well and last a long time (g). Jasco is cheap, quick, and easy to use . . . use a brush to wet metal and keep it wet for about 30 seconds, hose off. Dry, paint w/normal rattle can clean metal primer followed by color coat. I've used metal etching primer too, for the mast on a sailboat. It was more expensive paint but easy enough to use.
