Sambas aren't bad but the ones made now are crap compared to the originals. I happen to like Gazelles a little better but again, newer ones almost seem like knockoffs compared to the OG pairs I had back in the day.

I was busy before the thread was closed so I never got a chance to respond.

At least highonpez and homebrewk were kind enough to give a response without being ********.

Obviously half the point of straps is so that I can wear different shoes. I haven't spent more than 20 dollars on a pair of shoes since I was... 15? I tore through my canvas shoes in my first three days of riding before I switched to my seven dollar walmart slip on shoes.

All I wanted was an idea of some sturdier, quality shoes that would be able to take the abuse of cycling and also work for general wear. I know nothing about more expensive shoes or if anyone had any good experience with certain ones, so I decided to ask. The last thing I wanted to do was to spend 90 dollars on shoes that would be worthless within two months.

It was a perfectly legitimate question and thread, I can't say I'm very interested in coming here for questions again. Am I annoyed and venting? Yes.
If you go to Google and type in bikeforums.net: cycling shoes for toe clips, you'll end up with:

Personally, I don't ride without spd or spd-sl pedals and shoes. A good, stiff sole is necessary for good riding and good foot health if you do any serious riding at all. Poking around the neighborhood or down to the pub for some cheap beer is one thing, riding 30-40 miles or more at a stretch is something else.

Still, you get what you pay for, as you have found out. Pay more, get more. That doesn't mean you need to shell out for Dromartis but you do need to get something decent.

Actually, everyone needs a pair of Dromarti shoes right now:

^ This is all great information but OP is looking for shoes to be used with BMX platform pedals & straps, not clips and straps.

Okay, leather boots from the Army surplus store.

And since the OP is rather frugal, the Goodwill store has lots of leather soled shoes on sale.

OP is a homeless person living under a freeway overpass. I recommend this:

OP, you can wear any* shoes with platform pedals and straps. That's the whole point of straps; so you don't need cycling specific shoes.

*(Closed-toed shoes recommended. )

OP, go spend some money on shoes. Don't complain here if your $7 pos slip ons suck.

In addition to sambas, Nike Cortez have their place in the street/cycling market because they have stiff soles, durability, and their outer surfaces are smooth so they work well with clips and straps. -and i know op is using bmx pedals-

I was annoyed at the thread being locked and not being able to reply, not so much at the replies being posted. I didn't have time to be on the forum for a few days since I'm actually doing things like riding, not being on the computer I've been on internet forums on and off for the past 12 years.

As to why I haven't spent much money on shoes in a long time, it's because I stopped being active after I stopped playing sports in high school. I enjoyed the look of the average $20 pair of black canvas shoes, they typically last me a year or so in regular use, so I stuck to those. Now that I ride between 10-30+ miles a day and also started a courier job, I need something better. I obviously knew that my cheapo shoes sucked, I simply didn't know what would be the best bet for my money.

I ended up ordering the Adidas Sambas, a few people recommended them, the place I had to order from had them and I also liked the look of them. To those of you who replied with some helpful info, thank you!

I also had spent 20-30 minutes searching through the forum for "shoes" and "holdfast" or "straps", I wasn't able to find much. Seemed most people were referring to cages, which I don't have. Hence the original thread I made
