There's a guy in Sacramento that beautifully restores mixtes and was selling them for $300-350 max. I've seen his ads for years.
I have restored many of these, as I have a thing for mixtes. I've done at least 10, maybe more. Sold a really clean, fully restored (stripped down to frame) in the same color for $225. I've sold them for $100 unrestored. The market really must be crazy, although this is one of the worse examples. It makes me want to build up some of my French frames and get them on craigslist. Still, $300 max would be top for even one of my better restored bikes.

The mixtes of the bike boom era definitely ran the gamut. We picked up a Raleigh of about the same level as that Pug, at the bike swap in January. Not nearly as clean, but it was five bucks. The only thing that Peugeot has going for it is its condition. But that makes it maybe an $80 bike. The other chuckler is that the seller refers to the model as "Cadre Allege", which just means "light(ened) frame".

My biggest bike mistake of all time (and I've made a few!) was to sell a similar quality Motobecane mixte of my (then) wife's when those new-fangled mountain bikes came out. I've built her two mixtes (one Peugeot, one Motobecane) since then to make up for it.

I *still* have my early 70s Motobecane Grand Record that I bought new in 1975. awesome touring bike, i"d had a criterium style race bike before that and found it too twitchy on long rides.

Bought it originally from where now? I still don't know if I'm down with this whole ebike thing, it's like Huey Lewis says, "I see them on the freeway ... it don't look like a lot of fun." High tech and with it, most certainly, but I don't know if I'm quite ready for this.
A close-up of this monstrosity reveals all kinds of nasty surprises, The sawed-off crankarm, and the back end that's a different color, and the world's most heavy duty flag holder. Just what was this thing originally? I have absolutely no idea, except that it's "8 feet long", and that you should email the seller if you are "really interesting".

This looks hilariously/ scarily flexy. You never see a single swingarm suspension design on bikes for a reason. Also the description makes it seem like this is the bike you should take to get to your Grindr date.

I'm not so sure about the re-bar or the concrete, but in the stock car world we use lead bars for weight distribution. Maybe for that? I see that the design is Costume which leads me to believe that it was used in a Theater production at some point in it's life. The multi speed battery seems interesting though. The prices on CL are often out of this world. But perhaps the seller sometimes gets that price? I'm not a fan of old, rusty road bikes with downtube shifters and cheap parts, but maybe some people are?

only thing I would accept downtube shifters on is a nice original high end road bike from the late 60s/early 70s. anything thats not a vintage high end all original bike in cherry shape, if its still got friction shifters, they should be bar ends...

It's pretty, and very well put together, with good parts, but $1800 is pretty ridiculous for a 1980s mixte, IMO.

Yeah, definitely wacky to pay $$ for rechroming and respray on such a commonplace midrange mass-produced F&F. If that sounds snobby, well I am a snob but that's not what I'm talking about, I just mean the economics of it doesn't work out.
I have a top of the line, pro-level Follis from the '50s with most of the paint and decals gone, but it wouldn't be a good business decision to pay for a respray -- the difference in what I could sell it for would not pay off. Ditto my 1961 Bianchi Specialissima, a very collectible model that commands top prices in good condition, but its chrome is all rusty, would have to be redone. If I do it, it would only be for my enjoyment -- not to sell.
The payback is even worse for such a generic UJB as this Nishiki. The guy is going to have to lose a lot of money to sell it, unless he can find just the "right" (dumb) buyer. I'd peg market price at over a thousand bucks less.
Plus the handlebar angle will cause wrist pain, the rear fender struts are not cut to length, and the front extension of the front fender needs a strut. Picky?Yes, but at that price the build should be near-perfect.

I sold one that came off a bike that got upgraded to Ultegra stuff so it could have a smaller low ring... 42T minimum is brutal when you are bike-trekking in the mountains...
