Painting Project 1985 Tommaso (Alan frame)
EDIT: added pics! almost done!!!
Hey guys,
Im almost finished painting my Tommaso (alan built). its previous owner poorly sanded the original finish and crap/painted yellow...then he scratched that paintjob with a screwdriver...
so i sanded the entire body with #400 water sandpaper, and some spots with #200... this took a while!
then taped the aluminum lugs, and used a sharp razor to clean the edges...i thought this to be difficult, but actually it was fun!
a good friend told me about a place that sells auto paint products, were i bought a couple of products for my project. they sold me a bottle of self etching primer. This stuff most be good, cause the bottle clearly says this product is not intendend for public use (only for professionals! . They gave me a couple of books with autobrands and their colors...there i found the color i wanted, sky blue, VW 1977 was the match. For 18.00 bucks they bottled it up in a spray can.
so, im ready! last week i primered the frame. it was pretty easy, but had a couple of runny spots..had to sand and re primered. after that the frame was almost ready for paint.
yesterday i got a sunny day and i rigged the frame on the porch hammock style . Lightly sanded the frame with a brown scotch bright bought at the paint store. and sprayed 3 layers of paint, with 15 minute wait between each layer. lightly sanded and cleaned after the 2nd.
Almost finished. Still need the urethane clear. Im reading a bit about vinyl decals as they seem to be fairly easy to get custom made and i would need to put them before the clear coat. then find out how to sand clear coats without making it cloudy. Any of you know how to do clear coat sanding??
heres a couple of pics.

That turned out beautifully. I love the way the aluminum shows through the sky blue paint, and the cool designs. I can't wait to see this built up!

What's this frame made of? It's obviously glued, and the lugs are aluminum, but what's the tubing? Aluminum? Carbon?

it was in pretty rough condition when i got it... and the stickers are just needed in a complete frame...so i made my own stickers, representing the DIY attitude.
