Recommended bike rims for 90s bike

Hello,

I have a 90's road bike with (Ribble) with a Reynolds 631 frame with a campagnolo groupset. I've had a bit of a nightmare with wheels, one was stolen, another punched broke on me and more recently I purchased some CXP 30 wheels on campag body but the rims sadly are pretty worn down. I'd like to either buy a nice pair of new wheels that match the classic look of my bike or use my campag hub bodies and build on a new pair of rims. I'd like some recommendations on a nice pair of rims OR bike wheels please? I'm a heavy guy ~100kg so not after anything speedy/ aero - I do leisurely long rides on UK roads so need something fairly durable and robust - the CXP 30's seemed ideal but it seems hard to find a decent pair!

Thanks!

I have a NOS set of CXP 22 rims, 32 spoke holes, that might be perfect. If interested, I can place them on the For Sale forum.

Thanks! I'll consider this for sure. Just waiting on a few recommendations and do a little bit more research before I make the decision. Thanks for the offer!

Old 36-spoke Mavic Open Pros are on my old DR and have been very worry-free.

If you're interested in something that looks fairly 90s period correct but is new, I've been doing some digging along the same lines but have not run down that many options yet, see preliminary start to a list below (from what I've seen these are generally well reviewed/liked). Assuming clincher but some tub options out there of course.

H Plus Son TB14 (box style)
H Plus Son Archetype (seem to have similar V shape to the 90s Campagnolo V rims, but you may not like the decals)
Ambrosio Excellence/Excellight (trying to get a real price seems to be a problem as not many/any USA distributors?)
Pacenti Brevet (box style)
Mavic Open Pro (don't know all the models/styles but still pretty classic looking depending on color)

Good luck! Going to follow this thread as well since I'm in a similar boat, would love to see other suggestions.

Just get a set of Campagnolo Calima or Khamsin without the G3 pattern on the rear (although you would probably still be fine with the G3). They are reasonably priced new, look nice and fine with a 90's bike, are excellent quality, and no compatibility issues.

Take look at something from Kinlin, H Plus Son, Exal or a modern pair from Rigida, Ambrosio or Mavic.

These UK-Based retailers have decent selections: https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/rims-700c-29er-622/ https://www.spacycles.co.uk/m20b0s11...omponents/Rims and https://thecycleclinic.co.uk/collections/rims.

I like the looks of the H Plus Son TB14, Exal XR3 and the Kinlin XR200.

H+Son stuff seems great but the decals simply do not work with a vintage bike. Looks very "fixie cool", if that makes sense. Might try it out on a retro/mod build, though, or find a way to remove the decals.

H+Son tb14’s have no decals whatsoever. The only brand marker is the small black support plate around the Presta valve hole. You can just make it out near 9:00 on the rear 700C here:

Pacenti Brevet rims have a red/gold diamond shaped sticker that looks vintage appropriate, visible at about 7:30 on my rear 650B wheel in this photo:

Thanks! Unfortunately I have a cap of 5 posts per day and this is my second day!

I will send a picture tomorrow. This forum is great! Really appreciate the feedback, the options are excellent.... The H + Sons tb14 on Dfrosts bike look excellent, but other models do have an unfortunate 'fixie' decals on them as sheddle mentioned.

This got me interested, found a couple links of people remove H+ Son rim decals (painted on apparently) with lacquer thinner and/or carb cleaner, FWIW. I have toyed with the idea of getting some, removing decals, and buying some cheap Campagnolo 90s rim stickers from a guy off eBay to make them sort of "replica" style. But I think that might be too cheesy, just decal-free would probably look best. I'll post some profile pics below, the Archetypes are similar profile but a few mm taller and wider to the 1992 Campagnolo V clinchers.

OK so here’s the bike! Needs a lot of tender loving care which I will be giving it once I’ve got the new wheel sorted.

I’m leaning towards the magic Open Pro’s, panceti or H+ One tb14s. Box section rims feel right on this bike.

Thank you all for your advice.

Cool Bike. Digg the paint.
Open Pros CAN develop a rattle. I didn't believe all the stories because my three pairs were quiet.....until one rim wasn't.
Put some Italian Ambrosio Excellents or Excelights on your campy hubs.

H plus son Archetype in black for that frame. Its simply better in many ways than the shallow box rims from 30 years ago.
...or other similar rims thst have been mentioned.

Tb14 is heavier and shallower. On an early 80s bike, sure use a chrome tb14. On that ribble though- black and modern wpuld be killer.

Any good ideas where to get Ambrosio rims for a decent price? Was looking at some to pair with 1997/1998 Campagnolo hubs. Still not to wheel building on this one but the shipping etc. turned me off from ordering what looks to be a really cool rim (and Italian for trying to keep the theme going on the bike in question!).

You'll be the only one on your block with them. Worth it. Keep searching. There could be a pair on a shop somewhere. I can't remember if I found my Nemesis rims here. Probably not.
