Why do I think that “Bikecology girl” has been a very popular Google search term the last couple of days?

I am tempted to search "old women in bikinis" and post it here, but that would be wrong. I could also photoshop it, but that would be more wrong.

If there was a HOF for influencing cycling in the US, Alan Goldsmith would be a shoe-in.
He was around a lot of stuff...that I know of....:
Bikeology
ParkPre
Centurion Ironman
Cinelli Centurion Equipe
Specialized

I have no doubt there are more. I suspect:
BikeMor
Lotus
Windsor
bikes out of Mexico
one or more CA college teams
Kestrel

His advice was plentiful, knowledge good, and he kept a big box to think in.

Got to "know" Alan and some of the guys in the shop. Alan always said his wife/ex-wife Susie (?) was the inspiration for the shop, and penned a tribute to her in the last catalog that I remember when she passed away from cancer (AIR). Maybe she was a "model" in the early days. As an aside, there was another shop in west LA that Roger and Bill, who constructed the first FS MTB I ever saw, the Bushido, owned.
Susan Goldsmith was a sweetheart. Alan was an attorney, and the bike shop was indeed Susie's idea. They hired me as I was graduating from UCLA, and I worked at the Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, and Marina Del Rey stores during my first two years of grad. school. Lots of late Friday nights assembling bikes for the big Saturday sales rush, with pizza provided by Alan and Susie. I still have the Peugeot UO-8 I custom built for my bride back in 1973, with the Bikecology sticker still intact. My wife later became afraid of riding in traffic, so I built her a mountain bike and repurposed the Peugeot as my beater/commuter.

She's got it right - the earrings match the saddle, match the bar tape. I think the Velominati would approve.

The first shop location was in Los Angeles, Wilshire blvd near Federal Ave, I dropped in shortly after they opened up. Bright green fake grass flooring, Peugeot checkerboard stripe along the back wall. Had a roll up door even. They stated they were going to open a coffeehouse along with, (never did, but they could have done well perhaps, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf opened up on Barrington near San Vicente, but only sold beans and tea, you could sample for free. In 1979, I told the manager there they should sell cups of coffee and coffee drinks, the manager replied that she tried, but the owner was not interested!) If I only had some capital...

Later Bikelogy moved to the Bekins Van and Storage building in Santa Monica, then again closer to the Beach, about 14th street or Euclid.

At Wilshire and Westgate was Wilshire West Bicycles, Jim Holly worked there for a while and then started building Griffon frames. At some point WLA bike and Hobby bought or took over the Wishire West space, moving from Santa Monica Blvd near Corinth Ave. They did not last long there. The only "Westside" shop that still exists is Helen's Cycles.

Yeah, I worked in the Bekins Bldg. from 1972 to 1974, with stints in the short-lived Pacific Palisades, Marina Del Rey, and Culver City locations. I do recall Helen's, as well as Rancho Park Cycles (Russ Huges) on Pico near Westwood, where I bought my Nishiki in 1971, and C. Harding's For Bikes (Charlie Harding) on Westwood Bl., my go-to source of open stock Regina freewheel cogs. Lots of memorable group rides with Los Angeles Wheelmen, including 1972 Double Century, and Velo Club La Grange. (Regarding that last one, someone had to come in last to sweep the course for stragglers. )

La Grange was my club.
Rider of the year once too
a long long time ago.

now it has like 450+ members!?!

I would go in and keenly look at the bikes Charlie had- a Legnano up front
a few Hetchins. A yellow / blue Hellenic stayed bike was exceptional.
he had no time for young potential customers.
when I had saved enough to buy a real road bike moving up from sting-rays, I did not look there. Bachi.

Hey, do I know you? I worked for Bikecology my entire senior year of HS, 1972 and at least one subsequent summer. In the Bekins building. If I recall, Alan had specialized in draft cases as an attorney. I never really followed his career, but now I see how successful he was in the bike biz.

Hey Neil. Yes, I believe I remember you. I joined in late March or early April 1972, toward the end of my senior year at UCLA, and worked Friday nights and Saturdays until my mid-June graduation, then full time that summer and again Fridays nights and Saturdays as a grad student during the 1973 school year, continuing well into 1974. I believe you were working in the Bekins building shop when Alan had left a nearly unsalvageable wheel for me to true, as an entrance exam.

Alan did begrudgingly give me Saturday 24 June off so that I could ride in the L.A. Wheelmen double century.

Nice to reminisce about the Bikeology/Supergo shops. Does anyone remember Bill Townsend and Roger from a West LA shop with the Bushido bike (first dual-suspension that I ever saw)? If anyone here remembers the name, I'll (or they can) start a new thread.

I don't really remember you, but I remember a kid named Kirk or Kurt. His last name was something like Hasserjian, and an older ( 20's) guy named Kelly, who I think was sort of the senior mechanic. So long ago. We old. At the end of that year I went back to NYC to go to school. I think I worked for Alan the next summer when I came back for a while. We got into an argument about something and he fired me!

Yes, Kirk was a junior-class racer, and coincidentally related to the wife of my favorite UCLA professor.
Kelly was indeed the top-ranking mechanic.

I still have a couple of Bikeology branded items. A nice saddle bag with compartments for tools and a sew-up spare. And a saddle... Marked Made in Italy on the underside
