A sign I might have my priorities straight

I just passed on a sale of a $25 mid-80’s Univega Gran Premio in excellent shape so I could instead go on a ride and shop for a social distance barbecue tonight. Maybe there is hope for me yet...

Haha -- the thing is, with 5yo twins, an afternoon to myself is very rare. This would have taken most of the afternoon, and I'm also trying to minimize obstacles to getting my Mercian project done. Also, she wanted me to download a payment app called Zelle, and while I surmise it is legit, I didn't want to deal with something besides Paypal and Venmo.

I'm hoping someone will enjoy it and the snag. If I see it being flipped for $250 in the next couple of days, I might have a tinge of regret.

Mine are 17, but I do remember. I'm amazed you actually have time to ride! Most of my cycling was like this.

The training wheels came off last week and this weekend we did about 8km in a few trips. Maybe in a few weeks they'll have mastered the start and stop and I can hop on my own bike.

My riding and wrenching are done almost exclusively between 5am and 7am, and after 8:30pm. In between is a hazy fog.

You can tell them there's a guy on the forums who was far older, 7, when he finally took off his training wheels. The humiliation!

I saw a little girl riding behind her mom the other day. The kid looked really young, like 4 or 5, and was just killing it. I was amazed. The little bike looked pretty cool, too.

We're alternating between balance bike practice and teeny bikes with training wheels, so I hope they'll be up and running before too long. Most of my riding time the past couple of weeks has been following them in small circles on my own bike, i.e., "practicing" my low speed handling.

I often have the intent to wrench or ride early in the morning, but sleep keeps getting in the way. I have to steal time other ways, but I do manage to find it somehow.

So far, I'm happy I didn't pick up the Gran Premio -- the ride and the barbecue were much better than worrying about garage space and how I'd find the time to start a new project. Even overhauling a couple of hubs is something I need to plan for, and I'm getting tired of looking longingly at the Mercian frame hanging on the wall...

Wish I had a video of my 4 yo son heading straight for the tree (skinny and little) - slightly downhill - and instead of turning either direction, crashing into it. A slow speed marvel to watch, with Mom yelling ‘Turn, Turn, Turn!’

No humans or machines were damaged in the incident.

I didn’t really check, but at 8’6” and 3 1/2” diameter, it survived nicely. At least that rubber nick. It was a busy park.

Like slo-motion version of ....”if we don’t change direction soon, we are gonna get where we are headed - and that’s NOT good.”

edit for clarification: little kid’s bike coasting on grass only slightly off level produces, at most, my slow adult stroll. ~~2mph. But funny, nonetheless.

When I learned to ride I was about 5.
i had the training wheel thing down pretty well
making End of block sidewalk corner turns leaning way inside like a side hack monkey.

did not do well in a straight line. Apartment manager suggested learning in a big circle.
got it. Then came straight line stuff.

my son showed lots of interest at three.
missed opportunity
got him going well by 6.

daughter.... did not like the Raleigh Mountie girls bike.... gave in and bought a Trek.
knowing the steering would be too fast.
finally got her going on the Mountie -
nice slow steering- a terrific choice, what I learned on and my sister too.

Daughter was not really inclined to ride.
then she forgot.
not sure what I am going to do!

I was at least six, getting close to seven when I ditched the training wheels. When that happened, I remember thinking, "Oh, yeah. This is IT."

But I did immediately miss this thing I did with the training wheels in place: Going around a corner, when the bike was riding on the front tire and one training wheel, I'd speed up on the cranks, getting that fat balloon tire on the rear of the ol' Schwinn Bantam spun up to high RPM, so it when I touched it down again, it would shoot me forward in a sudden burt of acceleration. So much fun.

I think since then I've been pretty confident of my bike handling skills, a dozen crashes (probably) notwithstanding.

I know what you mean. My own memory, sans training wheels, is still with me ... just coasting from one driveway to another across the street...

There was a kid that was 5 years old a couple houses down. He had a big field next to his house. And he rode a tiny little motorcycle. A japanese dirt bike. Just in circles in the field. "Rhaaa! Rhaaaaaaa!" And here I am, almost 7 and still using training wheels on my Free Spirit. The humiliation!

But at least I had my Evel Knievel t-shirt and Sears Toughskins jean jacket. Salvation!

btw ... you don't post enough since you exited the hotel biz. smh.

It's because I'm actually busy, not just sitting at the desk waiting for business to walk in the door. Catching up on 15+ years of unfinished home projects and maintenance on a few rental properties that are in the family.

Got this winter's firewood laid up already
