Raleigh DL-1 wheel lacing question
A friend had this '79 DL-1 in a garage for 20+ years. He took it to me to get it rideable again.
I disassembled it completely and noted that the front wheel (36 cross 3) is laced with the spokes not going over/over/under as usual, but over/over/over. The wheel seems original with Sturmey Archer hub and rim. Could it be that it came that way from the factory? The wheel runs acceptably true, I was going to correct the lacing but some spokes are rusted and I think if they start breaking I'll have to replace them all. What do you think?

I've got a pair of DL-1s in the basement. I'll go take a look in a minute and report back.

Wheels with unlaced spokes were not uncommon in some older and lower end bikes. I am no expert on Raleigh roadsters, but it wouldn't surprise me if the original wheels came like that.

Easier to build that way and if the wheels are true and stable, all is good. If you do decide to replace all the spokes, you can interlace them then. According to Jobst Brandt, the big reason to interlace is that:
Interlaced spokes take up each other's slack during severe radial loading and reduce the chance of spokes becoming loose.

Our older Schwinns are laced that way. '74 and '59. Not a problem if they still have tension and are true.

One of those things you never think to look at, but reading this, I **HAD** to go look. Now it's something I can't un-see. Yup, most of our are not "braided" on the last cross. I even have some with un-braided 4x REAR wheels. Evidently the extra length of spoke for 4x lacing was less expensive than the extra few minutes of Mr. Arthur Seaton's (et al) payroll to braid the last cross.

Thanks all! So I'll leave it as it is. Strangely, the rear wheel is 40 cross 3 and has the "normal" spoke interlacing.
