Classic Paris Roubaix Finish

Sean Kelly vs. Laurent Fignon. No helmets to be seen anywhere. Phil Ligget's narration, and the dramatic (cheesy?) Moog synthesizer music of Geoffrey Downs driving the action. Everyone is at the top of their game here. I love the 1980's!

Great Post! I love 80s racing as well. You know that guy STILL doesn't get his groceries in a plastic bag

Why did it not finish in the velodrome? That was good racing, but not classic P-R at all.

No velodrome finish, so I guess I lied. Love those old steel bikes with the downtube shifters, especially the various Raleighs that Fignon rode during 88 and 89.

No desire to start a thread about it, but this thread reminds me ... Yay! Classics season kicks off this weekend. My favourite races (+ Il Lombardia in the Fall), by a good margin, in the Pro calendar.

Check out those helmets. The 43 Seven Eleven rider is wearing a helmet that covers not much except what, through the air vents, appears to be a balding head.

Reading Kelly's autobiography 'Hunger' he says he sat back at P-R in '88 because his team mate Wegmuller was in the break. Next he rode L-B-L and came 5th. He won his next race Ghent-Wevelgem.
His KAS (Spanish soft drinks company) team was targeting the Vuelta which came after the Classics in those years and Kelly saw '88 as his best chance of winning a GT, which he did.

I really miss my Peugeot (had 4).
Junior coach Roy Knickman gets a mention...got a flat from a great position. You can still get him to wince talking about that flat.
