I rode my Tommasini to and from work today. Round trip about 35 miles.

A pic from last year:

Before starting my ride today, thought I should give due credit to the Steel is Real t-shirt (Mr. @RobbieTunes) and lugged steel bike for a bit longer ride today.

Nice quality shirt MrRT

Cumberland, WA has seen better days - I hope

Riding fast can be fun too, I guess.

Got my SLT put back together this week. I haven't ridden anything smaller than 32c tires in months, and it felt great to blast around on a quick handling road bike.

20 miles / 17mph

33 miles on Skyline Drive today. The jungle like humidity has settled in here, probably to stay until about September. I started out headed south in the Blue Ridge Parkway but hit a rain shower so turned around, ran away without really getting wet and finished the ride on Skyline. This is at my turnaround on Sawmill Ridge overlook (looking northwest). This shower off in the distance ended up soaking me and bike about 1/2 mile before finishing. Doh!

I returned today from a 5-day tour through eight states and the District of Columbia. It started on the overnight Amtrak from BOS to DC. I was on my @gugie-650B-converted 1971 Raleigh Int'l.

It was the first time I was in DC's ***on Station. A very cool place:

After a 2 1/2 day academic conference in Arlington, VA, I headed to Annapolis, and that route took me through the Capital Mall:

After a night in a true fleabag motel in Annapolis, I headed to Lewes, DE, and made sure to dip my toes in the sand:

From Lewes, I caught the ferry to Cape May, NJ:

After a hearty breakfast in Cape May, I headed to Absecon, NJ, just west of Atlantic City. There I met @-holiday76, who rode the 76-miles from his house in PA. The next day (yesterday), we outran the predicted thunderstorms and headed up the NJ coast to Bay Head:

There we caught a commuter train to NYC, just as the rain started. In Manhattan, we got fairly drenched in the rain, but had a fine dinner at an Indian restaurant, and then parted ways, Brian to some mysterious shared overnight digs, and me to catch the train from Grand Central to New Haven, where I had a hotel room for the night. Grand Central is a picturesque place:

This morning, I caught a train from New Haven to New London and then followed a route I've ridden previously with @gugie and a local friend when we headed back to Boston after Weigle's French Fender Day in 2017. I passed the Connecticut/Rhode Island line:

And soon was treated to a 20-plus mile paved rail-trail, largely downhill all the way to Providence:

By the time I got home, my bike was rattling like mad and the front generator hub sounded like a empty spinning oil drum full of rocks. Time for some maintenance!

I finally was able to go for a nice ride on my beloved C&V '85 Fuji Del Rey road bike... You all know how the weather has been! Nice during the week, rain on the weekends, over and over and over.

Anyway, since I'm off my school bus now, I decided to go for a nice, quick, 15½ mile ride down to the James River here in Richmond, Virginia, turn around and head back home. 15½ miles in 01:01:00 for a nice smooth 15.3 mph speed.

Here's a quick photo I took, looking downstream at the James River (can't quite see the metro Richmond skyline). There is a real nice grassy lawn area along the river with a real small sandy beach too. People always walk their dogs there, wade in the river, let their dogs swim, etc...

Lastly, I continued on along Riverside Dr and kept going to the other side, under the bridge, and out to another road called Hickory that leads to another larger secondary road called Cherokee. I turned around and headed back from there.

I've been looking at new routes. Trying to find ways to connect routes.
Took a turn today on a road that should go somewhere.

This is where I dismounted, gravel was 3-4'' deep and loose. Walked a short way to see what was ahead. Thought I heard banjos so I turned around.

Lost and Found

Gave the road bike a rest and took the Cannondale today.
The Drainage Sumps are lovely this time of year.

It was here that I realized I must have lost my Vintage (old) tool pouch somewhere.

Back-tracked back home and found it by the shores of the sump!

I'm gonna wake up in the middle of the night and laugh out loud at your trepidation forbidding penetration. The familair childhood sound of crunching gravel under my wheels will never be the same again.

Mini gathering of BF'ers in Northern VA horse country yesterday. Andy_K, rccardr and I met up in Haymarket, VA and rode 48 miles through Loudoun and Fauquier Counties, including the little towns of Aldie, Middleburg, and The Plains. Thanks to Doc for arranging the meet up point and route. We lucked out in that the typical jungle-like humidity had cleared out to be replaced by a stiff breeze that was at our backs for the home stretch.

Yep, a gorgeous day through some beautiful countryside. That Guard Chicken was at the entrance to the Mountville Folk Festival that was setting up for the weekend.

Rare NDS shot of my '88 Cannondale ST500, which I call 'Three Parts' because there are only three original Shimano 105 components left on the frame (not including the paint!).
We rode past miles and miles of those stone walls.

Not exactly sure what SpagettiLegs is doing as he rolls past me...

...but he turned around after to see if I caught it on camera...

Andy plugged away all day, even though he didn't feel totally up to snuff. What a heroic effort!

Where we turned onto Hopewell Road, about 8 miles from the finish. While waiting for Andy and Hugh, took a LONG video from this vantage point of a freight train coming through for my 4 year old grandson, who's obsessed with trains.

All in all, another wonderful day in the Virginia countryside.

Jason, we actually stayed on route 9 just about all the way to Toms River, expecting thunderstorms the entire time--though that didn't happen until we were on the train in Bay Head. The funkiest part was crossing the Mullica River. We weren't sure bikes were allowed on 9 at that point, but figured we'd head that way and find out. It was two miles of essentially riding on the highway shoulder, but never did see a sign that said we couldn't!

Yeah, Route 9 can be sketchy in places, there is a reason it used to be called “Killer 9”. Hit me up next time in Jersey.
