I picked this up at a flea market yesterday for $40. I think I did ok. After some quick research with the serial number, I determined it's a 91. I think the RSX brifters were added, as well as the 600 rd and the Ultegra fd. Front rim is a Wolber GTX 2 which I think is original. Rear is Mavic Open Pro SUP. Not sure if the Strong seat tube is original. It did not come with a saddle. Modolo handlebars, Shimano 105 brake calipers and Look pedals.
The paint has some scratches but I think it will clean up ok. The color is called Cosmic Black w/white web. Kind of a splattered effect. It's going to be fun to clean it up and see what's under all the grime.

It was mud from the flea market. Judging by the condition of the tires, it hadn't been ridden in many years.

I couldn't get it to switch into any gears so I shot WD40 in the brifters and got the right side working but not the left. I'm in the process of opening it up to give it a more thorough cleaning. I'm learning as I go along since it's my first time with brifters. What type of lubricant should I use once I get them both cleaned and working?

There was a lot of some kind of tape residue everywhere on the frame as though it had been covered with decals or something. Still working on cleaning it all off with naptha.

I used Finish Line degreaser on my gunked up 105 brifters, and let that completely dry before shooting some Boeshield into 'em. They work great now, but since it's a lighter oil instead of the original grease, I plan to give it a squirt once or twice a year until I decide whether to update the mechanicals entirely on that bike.

I could not get the left one to work no matter how much WD40 I squirt in there working it back and forth so I opened it up for a better cleaning. Now I'm having trouble getting it back together. I bought some PB Blaster lubricant spray but I may use Boeshield too.

Sweet looking SR, man. Some day, I will own a splatter/web/marble/wacky paint job production bike. I love my Land Shark, but I can't get enough of these turn-of-the-'90s paint schemes.

That '91 SR frameset is a good riding frame and fork, despite what the naysayers will tell you. I had one in the SR300 level componentry level, great Tuesday night crit. weapon.

If you do open up those RSX brifters, be careful with the springs, pulling the domed cover cap off releases the spring and its the devil being played to get it back into place correctly. I had good luck just drenching the entire assembly through the levers and into the body and allowing it to sit and drain a while, then freeing up the mechanism on those RSX models. I enjoyed having them on my old 1997 R500T 'Dale, a few years back. There was a guy doing rebuilds on the RSX componentry that listed on eBay a few years ago, haven't seen him there in a while, as these are getting on in years. Still, when working they are good, daily use components.

The spray version of Tri-Flow works great as it is a lubricant. Spray and shift and spray and shift etc. 7/8 speed first gen STIs are pretty resilient. If all goes belly up, 8-speed Claris STIs (R2000) are really nice looking, feeling, and functioning, without breaking the bank. Good luck on getting the shifter reassembled!

I got it to work using the Tri Flow and a lot of manipulating the lever. I hope to have it on the road within a week. Gotta get some tires now, and a saddle.

I just went through a similar cleaning for RSX brifters. Brake cleaner did NOTHING. But, having the brifters off the bike, flooding with WD40 and letting them sit in the sun did wonders for both left and right sides. I was considering a Sora 3400 upgrade, but now am keeping the RSX on my 98 Cannondale R200. I sprayed in some white lithium grease, just a light amount. I certainly hope to never need to clean heavy goop out of them ever again.

I hope mine will look that good when I'm done with it. My forks don't have the pink decals. It doesn't have the paint splatter either. I think it may be a replacement. I don't see any frame damage though. It is aluminum. What do the decals say?

As I mentioned earlier, my fork doesn't have the same splatter effect as the rest of the bike. It's a solid black. I'm wondering if it been replaced. Here's a close up of the fork crown. Is this how your SR600 fork looks? Are the forks for a SC600 different?



Also, when I removed the rear tire from the rim, this is what I found.

Nice! I had a '92 R600. I sold it recently because I couldn't take all my bikes when I moved.

Well it's done for now. I still want to install new brake cables, but I did install new shifter cables, a new chain, new Panaracer Gravelkings, bar tape and an Avocet saddle I had laying around. I got both shifters working properly just by giving them a good cleaning. I want to raise the handlebars a little but I need to soak the bolt in PB Blaster overnight. It's not turning and I don't want to strip it. It rides real nice, and everything works.

This forum won’t let me post photos yet because I haven’t commented at least 10 times, but I still own my original Cannondale SR600 - same year, same color and everything. I’ve only updated the seat and post, the tired and the handlebar tape and brake hoods. Everything else is original. I’ve always stored it in the garage, so it’s in beautiful shape. My primary bike is a carbon frame 2017 Giant FastRoad Comax because the geometry is better for my almost 50-year-old body, but I’ve been thinking of updating the components on the Cannondale to make it my “fun” bike. But I’ve got a lot of miles (and a few triathlons) on that bike and I still love it.

This is my first Cannondale, and I really like it. It's a lot of fun to ride, although I haven't ridden it much since I prefer steel bikes. I tried selling it on cl but didn't get one inquiry about it. I even offered it for half what similar Cannondales were offered at. I'll probably just end up keeping it. It's a nice bike. Enjoy yours. You must really like it to have kept it this long.
