Finished my Firsty Tri today!!

I finished my first tri this morning. I did a Sprint (500yd, 11 mi, 3 mi) right near my house. My time was 1hr. 20 minutes. My swim and bike was slow, but I was using my old mountain bike so I was expecting that and I was a bit anxious in my first open water swim.

I PR'd my 3 mile time so that helped make up for it. I'm definately hooked and will buy a decent bike as soon as I can save up enought money!

Hey

First of all.........CONGRATS! Way to go. I'm assuming you did the Tri at Hansen Dam right? I actually showed up this morning thinking there were day of race registration, but I was unfortunately wrong and they would not let me sign up. I stayed and watched though. I think I might have seen you (if you were rocking the UCLA cycling jersey). Either way, congrats and good luck getting a bike!

Thanks for the encouragement. I was at the Hansen Dam Tri. I wasn't wearing the Bruin Jersey, but it looked pretty sweet. I got a bit excited last week and bought a TYR tank and pair of race shorts.

The race event seemed very disorganized, but it's only in its second year. I think the venue has great potential for Sprint distances and just needs to work the kinks out.

After reading many threads on this forum, I've decided to buy a good ($700-800) used road bike and throw some aero bars on it. I can only afford to have one bike to train and race on so this seems like the best compromise. If anyone thinks this is a bad idea, let me know!

A bunch of LATri club people were on my heals throughout the run and I was determined not to let them pass me! They completely pushed me forward

Go Bruins!!! Nice job. Keep us posted on your progress. Are you still a student. The tri club on campus seems to be a good one...they have some great athletes.

I graduated a couple years ago. I live in the northern part of the San Fernando Valley, but I work in Long Beach. I want to join a club, but I don't know if I should join a group in LA or LB.
