Not very recent, taken sometime in the last year. During her last month or so she got pretty sick. She was an independent cat, but she did come around to hanging on my lap once she was about 6. I have a picture from January on the day I had rotator cuff surgery. I was home and sleeping off the anesthesia in a recliner chair and she hopped up on me and kept me company.

When our daughter bought Carl home to us, September 2003, I was about to go down a strange rabbit hole of continuous surgeries. He took to playing in my lap when I sat in the recliner and worked on my laptop. Through the numerous surgeries, on my spine twice, and 14 times on my abdomen/small intestine, he kept me company. From day one he slept in bed with my wife and I, each night started on one or the others' stomach. He liked to burrow in beneath the covers, Monica called it "The Cat Cave". If we weren't in bed on time each night, he would fuss at us until we both were in the correct place. When I was in hospital he would not leave Monica's side, if she was at our house.

Bill, that's great - not the surgeries but Carl's companionship.
Zema chose to sleep at my wife's head and hang out on my lap. We knew something was up when she stopped coming to sleep with her although she wanted my lap to the end, especially the last week. In general she wasn't a cuddler. She started life feral. Before we were married my wife got her from a shelter at about 6 weeks old to be a mouser, and she was a prolific killer. By the time I entered the picture she got a mouse that must have eaten rodenticide because we almost lost her then. That may have been the root of her final life at 12.

@ascherer, Carl liked to get up on Monica's head when he moved just before we got up every morning. He knew our routine and times better than we knew ourselves. Monica called him her alarm cat, no need to set a clock at all.

Thanks guys. I had considered posting about her here but for a long time it was too painful - I love all my animals but she and I shared an exceptionally tight bond. It took @qcpmsame and others sharing their tributes to finally get me to do it, and it helps.

I just adopted two young males who were heading to a shelter. My old gal Annie, the surviving resident kitty, has had the place to herself since LG left, and she is none too pleased. I've been too busy establishing some measure of order with the water squirter to indulge in much introspection lately. The cycle begins again...

Harry, last seen in this thread in post 1538, has grown. Here we see him in a rare moment of harmony with Titus (on the left) in a photo that demonstrates the growth from 1.6 to 11 lbs.

Alas, he is not entirely housebroken - he will use the litter box for solids, but sometimes he just objects. We found the best way to keep the bathtub upstairs clean was to keep it filled, which prevents deposits but leads to feline watersport -

He is still a little on the wild kitten-ish side of things, but here is a rare shot of peaceful coexistence with Tabitha, who in general loathes other cats almost as much as she loathes the dog -

This morning he showed his appreciation for my wife's preparing a bowl of sweetly-scented flower water just for him. It's an interesting experience, living with a cat whose motto seems to be, "the world is my plaything."

My two new freeloaders - rescues from a dying relative. Groucho is on my lap, he's easy as all he cares about is eating and sleeping. Zeppo, on the other hand, likes to torment my old kitty Annie which will not fly. A lot of work ahead of me with him.

Such wonderful pix of your furry pals!!!

I'm so sorry for those of you that have recently had your friend cross the Rainbow Bridge. On Sunday, we were really close to have to make the decision about Mr. Dog. As we sat around him, I did a whole lot of crying- so did Mr. Dog- he was uncomfortable. Little Cat was right there on the couch above Trent's bed- taking note of everything going on. (short story long, he started walking better and appears to be feeling much better- walking and trotting spritely, still very interested in food... at 13, he just may have a few more good months with him, and we'll cherish every day). We have to separate the cats to feed them- and we took Little Cat up to our room to feed her, like we usually do- At bed time, I was getting into bed and felt cold under the sheets- and realized it wasn't just cold, it was wet. Little Cat peed in the bed.

I don't know if she thought we were hurting Trent, or if she was just jealous that we were spending so much time with him. Now we feel like we can't have her in our room- she was the only cat we allow in at night- the other 2 like to bother us while we're sleeping.

This reminds me of a tool in my toolbox. Not Phil Wood - what I have is something to remove an old SunTour freewheel. We have cats too - getting them to pose for a photo would be hard, however. I suppose I should try and sell the tool, but that's probably more trouble than it is worth.
