1988 Schwinn Letour

I'm gonna revive this old thread! Not much going on around this place anyway. Here's mine. '88, got it nearly three weeks ago for $65. Fixing her up a bit at a time. Already put new brake pads on it. Swapped out the cruddy, rusty QR seat post "bolt" (shown in first photo) for a proper seat post bolt as shown in the last picture. Changed out the six cog freewheel for the proper five cog. Pulled the front axle, cleaned and re-greased the bearings. It needs new outer bearing cones. Got new Kenda K35s hanging on the wall waiting for the new tubes to show up. Got the proper decals waiting on Fleabay for $22 and will get to the rest of the repairs in due time, cables, bottom bracket and rear axle. Gotta get some touch up paint too.

Since it is a 1988 LeTour thread, I'll show mine again. It was in pretty good shape when I bought it, but I started swapping parts around with things I had on hand and got carried away. I built it with a lean toward the touring part of the name.
1988 Schwinn Le Tour, triple chain rings, 7 speed hub, bar-end shifters, Brooks saddle, Zefal fenders.
1988 Schwinn LeTour as I bought it. Sun Tour Accu-shift with 6 speed freewheel.

I beat you in price by $25 but I think you may have the better deal because of the better condition and I really like the red color. I changed out tires too, but I think the '89 was the 1st year of 700's. I had some blackwall Bontrager 25's in good shape I'd taken off my daughters Ochsner when she wanted gumwalls. I take heart in comments by Scooper & RiddleOfSteel that late '80's LeTours were good bikes with several upgrades over earlier LeTours. I've been pleased with the SunTour Blaze groupset so far.

Both of those bikes above ^^ are very fine examples of the steeds that were being sold and ridden during the heyday of the ten speed bike.
I really like 'em!

here is my 1988 25" Le Tour, got it stripped over the weekend. I am up in the air on this bike,I had originally planned to paint it white and put some Schwinn World decals on it (my first 10 speed in around 1987 or 88)
I believe the plan now is to build it into a single speed, with 700C rims and 700x32 Gravel King tires to ride on chip/seal trails and newer lighter bars. Prob still going with all white , Black Cables & Bar Tape. I used a chemical stripper, scraper and then a steel wire wheel on drill and paint thinner, steel wool as a final step. Took about 3 hours. Debating whether to grind off the shifter bosses.
My goal for this bike is to somewhat lightweight, super low maintenance and just simple clean look as well as use up some parts I have laying around on a bike I will like to ride. My main bike routes are flat so the single speed sounds like a fun project and 32mm gravel tires would allow me a fast bike on some rail trails I can't ride with my main road bike. The quality of the frameset was evident once it was all stripped

$100 is a good price for a late-model LeTour in good condition. They're a very decent midlevel Japanese bike.
