Question About Cassette Lockrings & Compatibility
I bought a 10-speed Ultegra cassette on ebay from some guy with low feedback. When it arrived I gave him positive feedback. HOWEVER, when I installed the cassette this afternoon it was missing the lockring. I feel like an idiot for not checking the package thoroughly.
Is there any problem with using a 105 9-speed cassette lockring to hold the cassette onto the wheel?
Thanks.

Right off I'd say don't use the 9 speed lockring on a 10 speed cassette.
!0 speed mountain or 10 speed road... this might make a difference.

I believe lockrings from 7-speed on up have the same threads and should work across the board. The only problem is if your current 10-speed cassette has an 11T smallest cog and the older cassette was 12T or larger. The lockring for a 12T cassette is too big in diameter to work with an 11T cog.

The only difference should be the material. The Ultegra lockring is likely aluminum while the 105 is steel.

As someone alluded to earlier, the freehub bodies have been the same for ages-- the only difference is the smallest cog. An 11T needs and appropriate lockring, and so does a 12T.
A lockring for 12T is too big for an 11T cog and an 11T lockring is too small for a 12T. So long as the lockring size you have matches the small cog, you're good to go.

Thanks again.
