On-One 456 Build Project

Hello everyone,

Fall is here and so a new project.

I stumbled upon an original 456 size L in the German classifieds and after some research decided to buy it. Luckily On-One still sells the original steel rigid forks, so I also picked one of those up. The fork comes in tomorrow and the frame is waiting in Germany.

My plan is to send both to my preferred metal-work company who will strip polish and copper plate the both. To be honest though I am holding off on this decision until I see the frame. I kinda like the brown. At the same time, tarnished copper is also brown so I am leaning that way. I think the tarnished look in the seams and hard-to-get-to places will be nice, with the tubes being regularly hand polished.

Frame: On-One 456 size L
Fork: On-One rigid steel
Paint: TBD
Rims: China carbon 26", 30mm inner-width, hookless disc
Hubs: White Industries XMR black
Shifter: 12 speed XTR
RD: 12 speed XTR
Crankset: Shimano GRX FC-RX810-1 42t
Cassette: SRAM Eagle 10-50 or XTR 10-51
Brakes: Magura MT 5 or MT Trail Sport

For the first time I am deciding to try an 1x groupset. Comparing the gearing between my current 2x10 groupset, the 1x12 looks actually really good:

As this will be my first 1x set-up I am wondering if the big steps between gears will bother me at all. I don't think so.

Anyway, I think the geometry of the 456 will do a decent job as an XC machine with it's 69.5° head-tube angle.

The naming convention for these bikes is just great. I looked at the Inbred too but didn't like the geometry that much. Love the dar-dee-dar graphics and name though.

The frame and fork were received by the metal-work company last week. Turn around should be 8 weeks.

Hello, for anyone that is interested, the build is finished and can be seen here. I didn't want to double post.

Best regards,
Christian

Wow Christian that looks sweet.
What the build sheet on this? Is the fork an OnOne?

On-One CrMo fork (440 atc, QR)
Custom made wheels: WI XMR hubs with a Shimano MS freehub, a mix of sapim cx-ray (F+R) and race (R DS only), brass sapim polyax nipples and 35mm IW hookless carbon rims
Non-theft steel QR's
Shimano XT 12 speed group, 10-51
Rotor Kapic crankset with a 40t chainring that just barely clears the chainstay
Rotor BSA30 BB with enduro bearings removed and NTN 6806JR-LLB installed (bee's knees)

Hope Floating 180mm rotors F+R
Titanium rotor bolts
Wolftooth headset w/ spacers
Ritchey comp stem
EC90 bars (Chinese)
ODI grips
Thomson elite SP
Selle Italia Tekno SLR that I sanded down (still waiting on black silicone which I will epoxy to the topside in order to prevent slipping)

That thing is WAY cool. I love your drivetrain choice and the rigid fork. What kind of riding do you do?

Thanks a lot, Dave. The drive-train took me a long time to decide on, especially the crank. I kind of miss the way XTR shifts but with the price/weight difference it was a no-brainer. I ride XC but this one will pretty much be my beater/all-rounder especially for rainy weather because it is pretty heavy and lumbers. Definitely not a climber. Decent enough in slightly hilly terrain and really comes alive when you aim her down-hill.

I really like the fork too and was very happy to see that On-One (Planet-X) still produce them.

New pics are up. Since making them, I have removed the rear mud guard and added a RackTime Light-it 2.0 slender luggage rack with occasional Yves 2.0 pack. Together, they're lighter than my backpack and one hell of a lot more comfortable.

I have to correct myself here; this bike is very fun to ride and it can climb as well as the rider's legs can. I did a 60 miler the other week with over a mile of ascent and it was a dream the whole way. Thunder Burt's would help but those are no longer available. The Race King's are heavier but yes, they also grip better on hard-pack.

The White Industries hubs are as always, killer. And the NTN BB bearings also help to make things smooth as butter.

All said, this is one heck of a bike that is very enjoyable to ride.

Note: I cleaned it for the first time before taking the photos. Prior to that it hadn't even seen a hose down. I try to keep it looking like a beater so that nobody with bad intentions will give it a second look.
