Mavic Freehub install

I had the dreaded Mavic Freehub screech a couple of weeks ago (Ksyrium Elite S wheels) and cleaned and re-lubed the freehub but the problem did not go away so decided to replace it.

When I installed the the new freehub I noticed that if I tightened the drive side nut to a snug fit, the freehub did not spin freely. So I back it off a few turns enough to allow it to spin.

Last weekend on a century ride I started experiencing chain slack when I coasted and the chain was hitting the spokes and I could tell the freehub was binding. So for most of the remainder of the ride I had to keep pedaling to avoid a recurrence of the chain slack.

Once home, I pulled the freehub off again, cleaned it off, relubed and reinstalled. But this time I backed off on the nut a even more so there is no tension on it at all but kept the freehub from having any sideways play on the axle.

I cannot find much mention of this online and am wondering if I have missed anything. The small washer was installed correctly and I am using Shimano Mineral oil as the lubricant. Should the nut really be that loose or am I missing something?
