Wheel Dishing

Is it safe to re-dish a wheel 5mm on one side? I have a 130mm wheel that I want to put a spacer on to bring it to 135mm.

Yes. Put a drop of oil on each spoke nipple before you begin.

Assuming you're putting the spacer on the left side.

If you add the 5mm to the NDS side, the rim will need to be moved 2.5mm to the NDS side to recenter the rim over the hub's new centerline (equal distance between locknuts).

This redishing should be quite easy. Tighten the NDS spokes, and loosen the DS spokes if they become overly tight.

The redishing should give you a slightly stronger wheel, with better tension balance between the NDS/DS spokes (assuming your wheel have normal 130mm OLD specs).

This is the wheel in question. VO said it is not safe to do and would void the warranty.

This may be an ignorant question... but wouldn't the 5mm spacer need a reduced extension to engage the dropout slot? If not, it looks like the hub is held in place only by the compression provided by the quick release. I'm having a hard time visualizing this.

Looking at the hub used for that wheel, it specifically says there is an alternate endcap used to change it to 135. That is not a spacer, and adding a spacer to an unthreaded hub axle would be dangerous. You need to get that correct 135 end cap.

I'm sure most of us assumed you were talking about the threaded axle.

I doubt Velo Orange was talking about that 2.5mm of re-dish being unsafe. It might still void their warranty on the wheel build, but it isn't unsafe.

This page from THEIR website says you simply change the NDS endcap to switch.

Maybe you missed it, this is from the page you linked "The hub includes replaceable endcaps to convert between 130mm and 135mm spacing. The drive side endcaps are identical, while the non-drive side endcap for the 135mm set is 5mm longer, meaning that if you switch from one width to another, you'll likely have to have your wheel re-dished, slightly. And you would dish it 2.5mm.
Simply done by slightly tightening the NDS spokes.
