more 27 inch tire / rim questions

Just picked up a huge Maruishi bike....all original and it needs tires. Im building it up for a friend to ride as he is very tall and probably around 190lbs or there abouts.

It has 27 1/4s on it now and they are gumwall. The age has me thinking replace. They are mounted on araya rims and they dont appear to be hooked style rims.

I have used the Forte (performance bike house brand) kevlars and have had good luck with them. Last summer i did up a schwinn world (much smaller frame) and i replaced teh 27 1/4s with a 27x1 and it worked fine. A friend rode it most of the summer and in a Triathlon last summer and thought it was great. She had been on it with the 27x1/4 tires and it was much slower due to the rolling resistence of the fatter tire. I put the 27x1 on there and she loved it.

That said she was much lighter weight (probably 150lbs or less). THis new Maruishi RoadAce 404 is huge and the dude on it is heavier / taller.

The rims are the same on both as far as being araya 27x1 1/4.

Id like to get some replacement tires on order for this build im doing. The question is...do i go with 27x1 or try and find a happy inbetween at 27x1 1/8?

To be honest..the Schwinn world tires fit fine and they were skinny, had much less rolling resistance but if you were on the bike and looked over the front tire you could see the rim from the top meaning they were really skinny. There were never any problems in the turns with the rims hitting or anything but i thought i would mention it. They worked out just fine on that bike and looked nice. I do not recall what PSI i ran them at on this bike.

I dont want to put 27 1/4s on this new Maruishi build and have my buddy lose interest right away because it is "slow".....which sounds dumb but i want him to have a good time on this thing and enjoy the bike. (This is his first road bike and he is pretty juiced).

My thought right now is go with the 27x 1 1/8 because those are a bit skinnier and will provide a bit more cushion than the 1s since he is a heavier/ larger guy.

I do still have the Schwinn world so i guess i could just put those rims on it and see what he thought of those to gauge his reaction. It will be a rougher ride but likely faster. I dont really have any 1x1 1/8 to compare. I would image they are around a 700x25 as far as witdth? but im not sure.

Just looking for feedback so i can place my order for parts. I want to get the bike done for him as spring is fast approaching.

You might roll easier with the 27X1-1/8s. I had Forte's and they are very heavily built, durable tires but if you got something like a Pasela or Ultrasport, which I believe only come in larger sizes than 27X1, they might roll easier for having a lighter tread and sidewall.

Make sure you get lighter innertubes if you really think your buddy can tell the difference between how 1-1/4s and 1-1/8s roll.

+1

All the perceived speed increases are going to eaten up by frequent stops to fix pinch flats.

Get the tire with the most PSI rating and you'll get the least rolling resistance as sidewall stiffness is what leads to lower rolling resistance. Running too-skinny tires not only will result in more pinch flats but the PSI one can safely run will probably be lower too. I bet that of the tire choices the 1-1/8 and 1-1/4 choices will be rated for more PSI.

how does the width for tubes translate? I know you can use 700c tubes on 27 inch wheels although what is 1 1/4 or 1 1/8 transfer over to in sizing? I show 2 options for widths:

1.700c x 23-26
2.700c x 28-32

what would be the best fit?

Nashbar has Panaracer Pasella 27 x1 tires on sale until the end of March for $9.99. People on this forum have written they seem to run a little wider than 1".

https://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product...2_10000_202354

You can also use the coupon code OUTMAR for an additional $2 off.

I am awaiting 2 of these in the mail.

1" is 25.4mm, i.e. 25mm. Nominally 1 1/8" is 28mm, 1 1/4" is 32mm. For a 1" tire you would do best with the 23-26. Otherwise the 28-32. You can squeeze in either one but it is easier if the tube isn't too wide. Running too narrow a tube will not hurt either. The tube simply expands to fill whatever space it has. The smaller one is lighter too...

You're kind of all over the place with the explanation.
Rolling resistance shouldn't be that much different, actually, between skinnies and 1 1/4's, depending on the tire.

If you like the 27x1's, simply use them. Those Araya rims will accommodate 1 to 1 1/2 or even more.

Sounds like the 27x 1 1/8 is a good blend.

Thanks...

Im looking at the Pasella now. I dont have any experience with them. Can anyone comment on how they compare to the forte house brand at performance? I havent had any problems with these and they are a tight fit with pretty much a slick tread.

THe Pasella looks to offer some tread. ....and from what i read the rolling resistance is not bad. Not sure how they will mount up on 1-1/4 rims but for $9 im almost convinced to just give it a try. IT appears they come in the skinwall color too so the bike would retain a more original look.

If you search the forum for "pasela" you'll find that they're pretty much universally loved. That horse has been beat to death:

1) The standard Paselas are some of the best price/performance you can get. Skinwall is great for vintage rides.
2) If you want a little more puncture protection, get the Tourguard version at a little higher price.
3) If you want a little more puncture protection AND a little lighter tire, get the Tourguard folding version.
4) Most people seem to think they run one size bigger, depending on the rim they're mounted on.
5) They come in a very wide range of sizes.

Buy them, love them...it's easy.

I mounted the 27" x 1" Pasela Tour Guards from Nashbar on Ukai rims that originally came with 1 1/8" Silver Stars in 1981. They ride nicely, look great, and are supposed to offer some added puncture resistance. At $8 or $9 a piece (with a discount code), they are heavily discounted from their original $30 price. Not sure about the Forte tires, but if they are like Cheng Shins the Paselas are definitely better. The Paselas are usually also much more expensive.

I don't know why so many people say the Paselas are wider. I have 27x1 1/8 and they measure exactly 28mm. Maybe it's the other tires that are narrower than what is marked. I have a set of the Nashbar tires marked 27x1 1/4 which are the same width as the Pasela 27x1 1/8, i.e. 28mm or 1 1/8". I just received a pair of the 27x1 Tourguards that I haven't mounted, but they look like they are narrower.

+1. Paselas are the best tire your money can buy.
Rolling resistance is more a function of tread and sidewall than sizing. My 1-1/4" Paselas roll almost as well as the 1-1/8. (Hard to tell the difference)

You mentioned that you have NON-hooked rims:

Personally, I would avoid the 1" tire on a wider, non-hooked rim with a 190 pounder, because you should not inflate them to the "max" on a non-hooked rim. (In the olden days, "high pressure" meant something less than what "high pressure" means today with hooked rims.)

they're popular enough and enough retailers carry them that someone or another puts em on Deep Discount sale a couple times a year.
