My partner and I repainted and rebuilt a late 90s Klein Navigator for her. This was made right after the Trek acquisition but still at the WA factory, before it was shut down. It was a sports touring/commuting model with a steel fork, rack and fender mounts, and room for 32mm tires. We swapped the fork for a threadless Soma fork with more tire clearance.

My go to group rider. 87 or 88. I pulled these 28s off though. Tried the big tire thing, not for me. Looks better and feels snappier again.

My main ride (in fair weather) for the last 16 years. 1998 Quantum Pro purchased as a new bare frame in 2002 and built up by me. I just can't find a reason to get anything newer.

Really like those Pre-Trek models.

I'd say anecdotally the quality was fine on Trek Kleins. The thing that Trek tends to do, though, is water down design innovations and start moving brands it acquires to include lower end models as well. This was especially prominent for Gary Fisher (tons of entry and mid-level hybrids made by Trek) and Lemond (introduction of entry level models with Tiagra components and Reynolds 501 tubing, etc...). Not as much for Klein.

Trek bought Klein in 1995, but Klein production remained in Chelais through February 2002.
During this time the design and fabrication and painting were all pure Klein, and Trek was pretty much just a distribution network. Maybe Trek told Klein to stop making the Performance frames or similar marketing decisions.
From 2003-2006 in Waterloo, Klein was just a name Trek put on some nicer aluminum bikes that Trek designed.

2006 Q-Pro I built for my son last year. The finish doesn't show off in the photo, it's a nice-looking bike. I haven't gotten up the nerve to put him in cleats yet.

1984/85 Performance. Heavy mods needed to bring it to the present.
Innicycle headset/steerer adapter, Performance 1" threaded fork.
Modified shifter mounts for indexed, shimmed FD, symmetrical triple compact crankset.
Shifter cable routing through the DT, original press-fit BB. Works, 2x10 indexed.
Dropped the bag 4" on the mount and powdercoated the rack from shiny to black.

I rode this ‘92 Performance for about 38,000 miles over eleven years with 24 centuries or longer and three multi-week credit card tours, two in Europe. Here it is toward the end of three weeks in Italy (2001). Wish we’d had the supple, fatter tires now available, although I recall that the clearances were tight for 26mm. That CF Time fork didn’t help the ride as much as I’d hoped compared to the original aluminum fork. My adult son is still loving it now with a steel fork and the Chehalis candy red paint still gets compliments, but his passion is Ultimate Frisbee, not cycling.

What size tires are you guys able to clear? I've been seeking early 90's Performance or Quantums. Interested in seeing the largest tire that could fit either.

Chinese titanium 1” threadless stem permits use of 31.8 carbon bars...
Phil pressfit Hollowtech external BB bearings about to be press fitted.
Sorry to say that my budget 1988 Quantum is still not finished. I bought the used frame (with no fork) on eBay about 2 years ago for just ~$65.
