Benotto. Current market value?
I am helping a friend sell her Benotto. The bike is in San Diego. Did I read somewhere that they have a bad rep for cracked frames? or is that bs?

Is there an easy way to determine age and origin? does anyone know how to interpret Benotto serial numbers?

The subject bicycle is labelled as a Benotto 2500, though it has an incorrect era Columbus decal. That livery was introduced in the late 1980s. It's hard to get a positive identification on the components but most appear to Shimano New 600EX, with the rear derailleur being an obvious replacement, along with the pedals. Shimano New 600EX was 1984-1987 and the SIS levers, if OEM, would narrow that down to 1986-1987. The Benotto 2500 was offered with Shimano New 600EX SIS during this period.
One thing I have noticed on Benotto 2500 of this era is that the headtube sticker typically has an 'M.R.' at the bottom. This is also seen on the lower 800 & 850 models that road tests of the era report to be Mexican manufacture. Examination of higher models, such as the 3000 & 3500 of the same era, do not have this designation. While I'm not positive that this is Mexican manufacture indicator, it would make sense the manufacture of the highest models, such as the 3000 & 3500 would be retained by Europe, while entry level and possibly mid-range models would be sourced from Mexico. It should be noted that this designation does not appear to be present on earlier models, regardless of the level.

Yes I noted the incomplete group. However I have always thought that Shimano 600 was pretty good stuff. I will take a closer look at the bike this weekend. Thank you for the help!
