Strava Global Activity map (2017)

Strava just launched an updated heatmap with more data and other activities - running/snowsports/water sports. Would be useful if you could also differentiate between road rides and MTB rides (and maybe even further, paved/unpaved). Curious as to which 'winter' activities they include. I see obvious ones in ski areas and some on roads.

Cool. To me, the use is showing just how prevalent the gaps are in some of the long-distance greenways around my area.

Can someone explain what that heatmap is showing exactly? I've been using Strava for only about a month and can't figure out what that is.

Just showing how many use Strava, with logged activities, relative to their geographic location. The denser the color (heat) the more logged activities.

But when it uses my "geographic location"...is that the geo loc of where I started my workout, ended it, or the geo loc of the entire route that I took? In other words...if numerous users all began and ended in different locations, but their routes all interesected at the same point...will it show greater 'heat' on the map where those routes all intersect?

Theoretically, yes. But.. I'll leave to more experienced to explain it.

Wrong. Surprisingly little Strava usage in China, especially considering how many iPhones I know exist there. Untapped market potential

Entire route. If you had a main road through your town that a hundred cyclists used, but they all had their own entry/exit points to it, it would be extremely bright with 200 really dim routes off it.

Of course scale those numbers up, a map like this would never show a single track.

The additional activities still aren't available on the app (iPhone). When you begin a workout you still only have bicycling and running to choose from. You can, however, create a login account online and edit certain aspects of a workout. For example...yesterday I did a long walk but had to chose run (the shoe) on my phone. I was only able to change the activity to "walk" from my online account. I hope they modify the app to selecte from the various activities they added.

Are you talking about the Strava app which you would access on your phone?

If so, you certainly can change the activity to whatever you want.

Yeah. On the iPhone...when I open the app, and hit the "Record" button I'm presented with the option to "Select a Sport to Record" and the only options there are "Running" (the shoe), and "Cycling" (the bike). After selecting one of those two I select "Start" and my workout recording has begun. After I've finished and saved the workout I can go back and edit it, either on the app or my online account, and change it to another activity. But I don't see where you can record activities other than running or cycling live. (Unless it's a premium function...which I don't have).

You need a different device, not a phone.

I use a Garmin GPS watch to track my activities. It then sings with my phone and uploads the activities to Strava.

Interested to see what kind of an impact the Strava Metro project actually has and how many cities use Strava data for planning purposes.

Yes, so you select Running (the shoe).

Then, when the ride is finished, and you enter your details about the "run" on the phone, where it says Type of Workout (or something like that) select whatever you want from the great long list.

Nope, not a premium function.

Not a premium feature, but good luck tracking an open water swim with your phone.

I assume autocorrect at work, but I kind of like it. Kind of poetic. Maybe it's just because I'm an engineer.

What I previously didn't realize is that when you finish your 'activity' and it asks what particular activity you did...I didn't realize that you could scroll to all the different activities other than cycling or running. I've since...just today...included a "snowshoe" (although it was actually a run)...that for five miles was mostly through freshly fallen power of at least 6 inches. I wear size 13 so I figure it qualifies.

But, as I understand it, you can upload an open water swim that was recorded on a smart watch.

The entire route, although it doesn't differentiate based on direction of travel.

I noticed this right away, there's a clear strong heat line to my garage door. I have a privacy area set for my house. I looked at friends' houses too, easy to find all the Strava users' houses.

I have mixed feelings that I'm just paranoid, but also annoyed that Strava ignored my privacy settings.

I’m sure they would say they don’t have your info attached so it could have been anyone riding up to your garage door. It does seem like an oversight though.

I think I've had three friends bike to my house in the past year, but the 'heat line' up my driveway is very strong. It's clear to me that Strava is not keeping the start/end of my rides private in the global health map.

On the other hand, I sometimes log in to Lisa's Strava account and do not see the start/end point of my rides, so that part of the privacy setting is working.
