Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

87º now. Got one important thing done and then, if I can find a clinic room to check out a research volunteer in, I can go home.

I'm with Lester. As the rest(mostly) of you slide toward cooler, drier days, we're looking at two more months of high humidity coupled with triple digits. September, traditionally, is the worst. I've long wondered if that is because we're so ready for it to be over, or if it really is the worst. Like March when we lived in se Ohio.

Be careful out there. I saw waves and waves of Ragweed on my ride this weekend. That stuff is just evil to me.

Went out for an errand. Saw a large praying mantis on the corner. Took a photo, but it came out blurry. Wonder if they like the heat.

The highest temperature ever recorded in Houston was on September 4, 2000. 109F

Question- what’s the cheapest smart trainer that allows Zwift to control resistance? Direct drive trainers seem to cost more than my bike. If I understand correctly, the Kinetic Road Machine is a “smart trainer” in that it sends speed/power data via BT, but only the $200 pricier “road machine control” version is variable resistance, right? Any cheaper options?

Reason I’m asking is because we had a little baby girl 4 days ago and wifey was kind enough to let me get out for a couple rides, but in general a trainer will be more dependable for quick workouts.

Direct drive might be preferable but that doesn't mean wheel on doesn't work. I've used a Kickr Snap for a couple years. Took a little trial and error to figure out the right formula so I wasn't replacing tires every week (trainer tire, 90 psi, 2 full rotations of the resistance knob after contact) but it's gotten me through a couple rough winters.

New they're like $600. Sometimes they sell refurb units and also you might get lucky and find one on a facebook buy/sell site.

ETA: Congrats on the baby!

I haven't kept too close of an eye recently, but yeah, ~$500 for a wheel-on smart trainer is a where it starts (Kickr Snap). DD start at a couple/few hundred more, typically. If you keep an eye out, some manufacturers sell refurbs/open box/seconds for a decent savings. I see that Wahoo has some DD refurbs for under $800 right now.

These are cramps that come on several hours into a HARD ride. But once they hit, I have a tough time continuing to ride, even at a reduced effort. I know some studies say this is not really a "muscle" problem per se but a nerve issue, and the latest treatments/elixirs are targeted towards certain semi-caustic agents that cause a reflex response to the motor neurons. I have not tried anything and would prefer to PREVENT the cramps, but treatment is also a consideration.

Any thoughts?

!

Enjoy this time. My nephew just turned 3, and I could have sworn he just learned how to crawl around just last week- the time really does fly by.

I think it's mainly because it's getting old.

Hard to tell if the massive looking t-storm moving through the city is going to hit us or slide to the north, but it's gotten dark enough that some street lights have come on.

It's not hitting my office hard, but I can see that it's raining pretty good up in my 'hood. The brunt of the storm has passed to the north several times last this year.
