Well it is finally time to get organized... with pics

Hello to All,
After reading a number of recent threads on bike storage and getting inspired I decided to take on the challenge of organizing my bikes.
I realized that it was getting difficult for me and my clients to get into my studio, we would end up talking bikes before talking architecture!...
Like many of us on the forum I needed to get my obsession with collecting vintage bicycles under control....so I decided to "try" to get some level of control back (and at the same time make room for more bikes .

Yes, I know that I need help, but I am on a quest to get better organized and to thin the herd.looks much worse than it is because I started moving stuff before I realized that I needed to take a few pics...I am a hoarder but not as bad as it looks!

I laid out a few of my weekly riders leaving the bikes that I ride only occasionally in the studio.

More on the right side but a little embarrassed to show them.

I liked the solution that texbike had designed and reached out to him for some advice etc. and went off to home depot for parts for assembly. HD will cut and thread the gas pipe for just a few dollars which was well worth the price of admission. Park hooks ordered and waiting for the mail to arrive so I can get started.
My intention is to build a custom cabinet to hold the hoard of bike parts that are waiting to be hung on the bare frame as well as serving as an architectural model table as well as a place to layout drawings.
I will post pics of the project.
Wish me luck!
Best, Ben

You need to go full KonMari on those useless old things. Luckily for you I’m happy to help with disposal.

I got the 3/4"conduit and gas pipe cut this morning it's kind of hot here in L.A. so I am going to clear the studio a bit more and then go into the shop for fabrication/milling of the counter.
Hopefully the park hangers will get here this evening.
Thanks for the encouragement and offer to make my life easier by taking them off my hands.
Best, Ben

Go to it, Ben. ( Good to know that HD will cut threads. Can they cut reverse threads too? Having threads(esp reverse)done when I was in college was major reason why I used Kee Klamps, ( I alsohad a residual fondness for allen bolt fittings
Do those bikes proud.
Cheers, Eric

Fun. You have a great space and training to take advantage of it. Also digging the Lemond. I've been missing my MJ lately. None of your camera angles are showing the Bud Kegerator?!

Classtime,
Yes, it's nice getting it finally organized....as most of us know N+1 can get out of hand and I am finding that I don't often ride all of the bikes that I have, so soon I will list a number on the CV forum for local sale here in L.A.
Many were taking up "floor" space and thus the need to hang them.
This evening I thought about doing a few things a little differently. I may hang some vertically and a few horizontally, I'll see how that plays out.
Thanks for the like on the Lemond its a favorite along with the Gios and a few others that are in the rotation.
The Kegerator is next door in the garage!
Best, Ben

Eric,
My home depot won't cut reverse threads so I had to measure pipes for exact fit . I managed to get it right along with the precision use of a 10lb sledge hammer. It would have looked cleaner but I went old school and did not use the fancy fittings with the allen screws.
Tomorrow I will be hanging the wallpaper.
Best, Ben

Well got it done...not completely cleaned but enough fo now.
I put casters on the cabinet so that I could move it when necessary and milled out the corners so that it wouldn't be just a heavy block of plywood and put some Formica in the holes to "clean it up.

I hung some of the bikes along the west wall but still had to use one rack...I will need to sell a least 6 to accomplish my task of thinning.

A few more pics, hung a few from the joists above...

That's a great looking space, even without the bikes!

Gugie,
Thanks, I built it about 20 years ago...hard to believe that I was able to do it with one other helper and on the cheap too!
19-'0" ceilings make it feel bigger along with the sliders for windows.
The upper is/was a separate workspace now housing my daughter's stuff she brought back from CAL.
Best, Ben

Man. You don't mess around, do ya? I'd have done the first post and a few replies, then resurrected the zombie thread two years later when stuff had gradually moved around enough to be out of frame for the "afters."

Well done!

Thanks F531,
Hah hah, I wish that I had the luxury to wait another 2 years to post progress but the clutter has been bothering me for quite a while and the summer in L.A. is not going to be a friend...seems global warming is here and it will be very hot so expediency was paramount (pun intended!).
I made the schedule and tried to knock things down a day at a time and actually finished most of it! Getting the pipe up was the hardest because the main beam was twisted and I was too precise with my measurements, thus the hammer.
Hanging the bikes over the seating gave me a better opportunity to "see" them and there is enough clearance that no one will hit there head.
I still have much to do (I'll be listing quite a few bikes on the forum for sale locally) and a more detailing/cleaning/organizing but at least I am now able to manage things a little at a time...
If I wasn't so tired I would have move stuff out of the frame, but unfortunately, because its a "working" studio there will always be some clutter!
Models are still made by hand not the computer or 3d printing so there is always cardboard laying around, I still use a fountain pen, pencil and trace for drawing/sketching and leave the computer to the folks in my studio to translate etc.
My next task is to clean out the garage so that I can get space back for my cars and make more visits to the visit the "kegerator".: lol:
Best, Ben
