Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lovely. What part (asked with interest as I know how challenging some of the urban hills can be in Vancouver, and how nice some of the rest of it can be)?

My first time on the Alpine Loop road this year. It was just cleared from snow and debris about a week about one week ago, but vehicle access will still be closed on the upper section for another week. Suweet!

41k wine ride with Mrs. NoWhammies. Great way to spend Sunday. Sample some wine. Go for a nice easy ride. And best of all, the weather was nice and sunny.

@Rowan You are correct. Lots of hills in Vancouver. This route was out to the airport. There are some flatter sections out by the university. More importantly I wasn't hammering it out trying to get a new watts record! For me, that's the greatest challenge. Learning to just ride and enjoy being out together.

Two or three walks of 2-5 miles over the weekend.

A 22 mile ride Saturday to test a Wahoo Tickr. Tried for a 20 minute FTP test and had to re-ride my training route two or three times to get one continuous data log. Kept getting glitches and losing logs or they'd be broken up. The monitor is probably fine, but the recent app update was a downgrade in reliability. Hopefully Wahoo will fix that glitch soon. It used to be the most reliable fitness app I'd tried, even on my old iPhone 4s.

But the end result told me pretty much what I already knew without using a heart monitor or power meter. Mildly interesting but no revelation. I'll probably only use it on the indoor trainer or a few training rides up to an hour, but I doubt I'll use the Tickr very often.

And a 28 mile social ride Sunday with some new-to-me folks. The wind was ridiculous, swirling every which way, with gusts almost strong enough to knock us over. We delayed the start, checking the weather until the storm front moved north and east of us. Very pleasant ride after the weather cleared.

Went down to the Pinnacles and back, which is a 63 mile ride but I had a bad reaction to something I had for breakfast and ended up calling for a ride about 10 miles from home. First call of shame and it didn't involve a breakdown. It was about 67° when I left a little before 8AM and 90° when I got home.

Tulsa Tough - Medio Saturday Morning
Distance: 66.97 Miles
Time: 3:30:35
Speed: 19.1mph
Wgt Avg Pwr: 198 Watts

My first semi-competitive ride. With a few minor tweaks I would have finished in the top 30 out of 418 entrants. GPS error cost me some serious time and the guys I was with stopped for too long at 31 mile food/beverage stop.

Next year I'll start closer to the front and get with a faster group and make my one stop much shorter.

Friday: Hot (mid 80s F) but sunny and dry - a great day to ride! I rode with three teacher friends who finished up the school year last week and wanted to start the summer right! 38.1 miles, 1,056 ft., and a nice stop at a favorite Wisconsin gas station (that incidentally has its own brand of dairy products, including of course cheese curds.)

Sunday: Skipped the ride I'd planned - a 47 mile ride to recon a possible route, with another 45 mile round trip to and from the ride. It turned out for the best; another rider heading out to the ride (by bike) got caught in a thunderstorm, took shelter in a barn, and was rescued by the ride organizer (who decided to recon the route by car). 0 miles, 0'.

Monday: My regular Monday group was off to a great start on a great route, with a difficult climb followed by a twisty descent with amazing views. I PR'd both, and beat the QOM time on the climb! (I quit Strava leaderboards.)

There was a miscommunication in the paceline on a flat stretch, and two riders went down...one with a bit of road rash, the other with some broken bones that will require surgery. I still feel awful about the whole thing, even though I was way in the back and nowhere near the pileup. 30.3 miles, 1,194'.

Saturday: Normal club run of 30 miles, and stepping in last minute to take on last rider duties for group 3. I have a double century in 10 days and weather wasn't great/on the winter bike, so I didn't mind the gentler ride. Really nice group with a few new members, and the rain mostly held off. The wind, however, was a different story.

Sunday
80 miles with some of the other female members of my club. A couple of notable climbs, but nothing extreme. There was a long drag out of a town called Wooton-under-Edge and another called the Ladder, which is a short series of switchbacks. It wasn't too steep, except at the start you cross over some cattle grates, so lose any momentum for the steepest bit of the climb at the start.
Really nice coffee stop at a farm shop as well. The impending rain held off until all of us made it home, with the heavens opening as soon as I walked into my house.
