Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Glad to see another sailor here. What kind of sailing do you do?

Keep it long enough and it will be a classic. Especially since they don't make them any more.

Do you have a plastic Saturn?

Yes. The side panels are all plastic and indestructible.

The sad news is the subframe is steel and subject to rust, especially for those of us who live in snowy climates thanks to rock salt. I am hoping to keep it for a few more years, but I am aware it may not last forever.

One day we'll see those door panels floating in the plastic ocean!

The salt and rust is one thing I do not miss from living in a colder clime. After I finished school, I took my rusted out Celica to trade for a new car. When I asked what they would give me in trade, the guy looked at it and said "Nothing since it has cancer. But, we'll only charge you $50 to haul it to the junk yard." Deal!

And, we no longer go out to dinner or for entertainment, so I rarely, if ever, wear my dressier clothes. I was telling my wife this morning as I put on the suit that it's a shame that I have an entire closet of stuff that I simply don't have a place to wear it. The shoes I put on today, for example, haven't been worn in at least 8 months.
It's depressing.

I haven't owned a suit since I gave away my uniforms, but I have some nice clothes. I keep one of two lovely Irish tweed jackets in the office and sometimes wore it to clinic and senior meetings. Probably wore it twice last year before I stopped going in. I remember putting on a pressed shirt, a tie, and my Brooks Bros cashmere blazer for an evening event last winter with LSS's partners. I have a journal editorial board meeting in February. Maybe I'll put on a shirt with a collar for that.

Looks like it's still in pretty good shape for its age. Down here, a dark color car would be down to the primer on the horizontal panels due to UV damage. I tint the side and rear windows, and religiously use a windshield screen to try to keep ahead of interior damage from the UV.

I also gotta say, I have never kept a car for 23 years either! Only wives and kids.

If I can ever retire, I'll be happy to never own a suit again. Right now, I have about a dozen suits and half-dozen sports coats. Pre-Cov they were worn pretty regularly even though the office was always business casual. Since I have to be the rainmaker, office slave, and stand up guy in the court room, I always believed I have to at least look like a "lawyer." I used to take clients and prospects to lunch at least three times a week, and felt the necessity of dressing nicely for that. Now, I wear jeans and shorts to the office since I hibernate and pack my lunch most days. Quite frankly, I'm ready to get back to the good old days of dressing up more.

Got out for a little spin. That was interesting. Had a couple pucker-inducing slip-slides, but the studs grabbed and righted me. I've never worked to hard to go 11mph.

Ive been using Muc-off and find my chain looks completely clean with a low pressure spray from the hose (necessitates a new application but it seems to work great)

this is on a completely clean chain at 1st application

One of the things I miss the most about going to the office was wearing a jacket, button down and sort of dress pants and shoes every day. I’ve got a closet full of banana republic jackets, shirts and pants I don’t know if I’ll wear again anytime soon.

My first car was a 1966 MGB that I bought in 1979. It had already had its floor panels replaced, or at least augmented with what I think might have been aluminum sheets. A few months after I bought it, I had the rocker panels reinforced with welded on channel iron. Then I moved from Southern PA to Upstate New York (Ithaca), where of course things got worse.

BUT, in Upstate New York, a 1966 car that was still on the road got me compliments for what great shape it was in!

Then I moved out to California, and the company that had hired me was kind enough to move my car, too. Out here, it was considered a rusted out piece of s***. Literally, I was told by one garage that nobody would work on it without a tetanus shot. I got $200 for it in trade, almost certainly by having $200 added to the purchase price of the new car.

Take-home lesson - whether your car is "in great shape" or "a rusted out piece of s***" depends on where you are when you ask.

Don't tell Mrs. GeneJockey, whose beloved Sienna turns 20 this year and just got brand new front brake rotors and battery. Two years ago, it turned old enough to vote. Next year, it'll be old enough to drink.

For a long time, I wore nothing but blue button down shirts and tan Dockers. Then my wife got tired of me looking like I worked at Blockbuster.

The great thing about working in research is that they don't ever expect me to wear coat and tie. They don't mind jeans, but they do frown on T-shirts as a regular diet.

I just can't keep a car for more than a few years, at most. It's a disease.

Upside of that is that I'm doing my part to keep the economy stimulated.

I’m with you. Friends ask me if I ever got new tires or oil changes. Another joke is I think the inspection sticker with a month showing means the expiration date of a car

My brotha from a different motha!

The shortest I can recall recently was a 2014 model that I traded at 11 months and 5,000 miles.

It’s a 62 but custom geometry. It really SHOULD be a 64 but that would result in such a long head tube that my fork options would be limited. The compromise is the slightly upsloping stem.

I fixed the chain to be not backwards. Took bike for a quick ride up/down the street.

Shifts like a dream.
