ok now that you've perked my interest in Sekine I just pick up another one.
The previous owner purchased it new in Manitoba after visiting the factory in 1975. These are the only pictures I have so far can you tell me model from these or do you need more pictures. Doesn't the head badge suggest earlier date? Also he tells me it never had the spoke protector?
thanks

Here is the catalog

thanks for that
I think the bike is pretty original as I spoke to the first owner, the lack of the spoke guard suggests its a SHX 270??? He told me it never had one. I will have to have a closer look at the components tomorrow and compare with the catalogue

Not a SHX with that level of components. Still looks like a very good one and in great shape!

This SHS 271 was original and never had a spoke protector.

Here are some more pictures I took today starting to clean the bike up. Looking to the group wisdom for information re the bike. Year? model? the "guide" on the derailleur cable stop? Why the second hole in the rear drop out? Looking to be educated.
thanks

The cable guide by SunTour acted as a chain slap guard for the chain stay. Most drop outs AFAIK were Shimano labeled. Not familiar with those.

extra hole in rear drop out?

I believe your bicycle to be a circa 1973 Sekine SHR, which was the immediate predecessor to the SHS, the main difference being that the SHS switched to a Shimano/SR component mix, rather than the SunTour/Sugino/Dia-Compe mix seen on your bicycle. There should be 4x-x(x) date codes on the back of the crankarms that will help to determine the vintage. Having said that, the rear derailleur looks like it pre-dates the rest of the bicycle, so it may be a replacement.

Manufacturers started moving towards dropouts with shorter axle slots in the 1970s, Rather than designing completely new tooling, the most cost efficient method was to update the existing tooling and fill the rear portion of the axle slot on a long dropout. While, this was cheaper than a completely new dropout, it also added weight. Incorporating a hole in the filled section, mitigates the weight increase.

The cradle on the derailleur cable stop has two functions. As noted, it helps with chainstay slap and it also serves as a chain rest when the rear wheel is removed..

Hello holla005,
I do not know if anyone responded to your request for a date for a bicycle.
From the serial number the date of frame manufacture is X=1973 and 5=May.

'165' is crankarm length in millimetres. '47 is year code based on the Japanese Imperial Calendar. In this case it is Showa 47, which is 1972. The "8" is the month, Hachigatsu, which is August. So, the cranksarms were manufactured in August 1972 and would have reached Sekine some time after that. During this era, most Japanese manufacturers started building the new model around September, so it is almost certainly a 1973 model.

That is great not only do you know a lot about the bikes but also Japanese! thanks again. I have all winter to get it cleaned up for the road.
Do you think this was assembled here in Canada or would it have been imported? As I mentioned the person I bought it from. bought it new in Manitoba (1975) after visiting the Sekine plant. He was a Michelin rep as they were looking for tires from Canada but Michelin tires were imported from France at this time, so no deal. Sekine was looking to make it more "Canadian"

I found an abandoned Sekine in the woods. It had been outside for many years. The frame was full of hardened dirt (bee nest) and it was covered in ponderosa pine needles. Just finished getting most of the dirt off of it and it looks almost new. Very little wear. Good quality material as all the chrome is nice and no rust. It has a diamond badge at the front. It is an ugly green colour. Cool Sekine spoke protector. Sekine seat. Wheels are true. Down tube says world finest bicycle. Has Shimano front and rear dérailleurs. Is there a way to find out what year this bike is from? I can’t post pictures here??? Thanks Pete

post the serial number and someone will get back to you mine started with X which meant it was 1973 and you can see above, that the information on the crank verified that date

The number is 3355AY. No dates on cranks, just some small symbols. 😊

Posting these for Bricklin69 . Slightly different from my recent green step thru, ie Eagle vs EagleII, cottered alloy cranks but it sure looks to be in nice condition!

Thanks for posting! That bike is growing on me. My modern bikes don’t have the same cool factor. This one might stay in the house.

I just found a picture of a 73-75 Made in Canada Sekine headbadge. I sold the mixte framed bike a few years ago.

If you decide to part with it let me know. I had a nice one a while back but the frame was too small. Yours looks like a 23" frame? Interesting your user name is Bricklin, anything to do with the car?

I grew up in eastern Canada, NB. The Bricklins were built there and as a kid seeing them I dreamed of getting one for years but never did. I fancy two wheeled transportation in all its forms now so my garage might never see a Bricklin.

The Sekine frame measures 22.5 from top of seat tube to center of bottom bracket. I’m all the way out in Southern BC so sending it to Ontario might cost more than the bike is worth but I’ll let you know if I need to part with it. 🙂
