I was lucky that I went down those switchbacks seen in the last photo in the second post. It averages 14% for about 3 miles.

Southern Italy: long climb into the alpine air

Yesterday's ride was an almost continuous 5400 ft climb to an alpine land of cow-bells, cattle and goats. The ride started at sea level among palm trees and cactus. It reached it's turn-around point in foggy alpine air and scrubby mountain growth.

Hi,

The legs held up well. I did enjoy more than 10 hours of a very restful sleep.

Most of the climbing is between 4 and 12%. It's not too bad at a slow 4 to 8 mph pace with a 28 chaining and an available 34 rear cog.

Riding down is serious with full attention required. I keep my eyes glued to the pavement and come to a full stop when enjoying the scenery. Keeping the rims and tires from overheating requires that I alternate the use of the front and rear brakes.

I use Map My Ride to develop and map my own routes. Map My Ride includes a Google Earth "Fly By Video". This is found by clicking on the 3D icon on the Map My Ride map. This allows the viewer to fly over the route in 3D using software. It also provides "Street View" with enough detail to evaluate road quality.

https://www.mapmyride.com/it/amantea-...route-57295864

Another aid I use is to drop a pin at the half-way point on the route using the map and directions app on my iPhone. If I need directions while on the route, I can ask the app to map the route from my current location.

I could use this methodologies to plan rides in most of the scenic locations in Italy or any other Mediterranean region. Most of the rural roads are scenic and bike safe. My twenty-something year old daughter is planning a multi-day tour this summer. I'll combine reviews of touring routes from Crazy-Guy-on-a-Bike with Map My Ride to plan a route from somewhere near Munich to Vienna for her.

Thanks for the pics, growing up in southern France and southern Italy, I can relate to many of the roads traveled..
Enjoy... I don't get to return often enough but once college is done... Seriously contemplating at least a partial move back to the Menton Ventimiglia area...

Cheers

One last long ride into the mountains, I fly home in a few days.

Crystal clear air and 150 mile panoramas helped made today the best while in Italy;

This is the view from about 3700 ft above sea level looking north to Golfo di Policastro;

I had to control my speed and eye movements or risk going over an Amalfi sized drop.
I wonder if anybody here ever considered Andy Hampsten's guided tours in Italy. Not that I could afford it but listening to some of the interviews with him on podcasts it sounds like fun. Obviously you seem to know your way around without the need for a guide.

Normally southern Italy is more brown than green in the second half of the year. This spring was wetter than normal with multiple rain storms every month. Calabria in southern Italy is cooler and gets more rain than most of coastal California, but the climate is similar.

I'm no longer using the bag in the picture. It was a low cost temporary solution. It didn't interfere, but I'm using a better fitting frame bag now.
