I was lucky that I went down those switchbacks seen in the last photo in the second post. It averages 14% for about 3 miles.

Southern Italy: long climb into the alpine air
Yesterday's ride was an almost continuous 5400 ft climb to an alpine land of cow-bells, cattle and goats. The ride started at sea level among palm trees and cactus. It reached it's turn-around point in foggy alpine air and scrubby mountain growth.

The legs held up well. I did enjoy more than 10 hours of a very restful sleep.
Most of the climbing is between 4 and 12%. It's not too bad at a slow 4 to 8 mph pace with a 28 chaining and an available 34 rear cog.
Riding down is serious with full attention required. I keep my eyes glued to the pavement and come to a full stop when enjoying the scenery. Keeping the rims and tires from overheating requires that I alternate the use of the front and rear brakes.

You lucky bugger.....I am so envious, that looks awesome and brings back many great memories when I was fortunate enough to bike in northern Italy and that/those approximate regions in europe....looks like a great area, I'll have to check it out on my maps.

I use Map My Ride to develop and map my own routes. Map My Ride includes a Google Earth "Fly By Video". This is found by clicking on the 3D icon on the Map My Ride map. This allows the viewer to fly over the route in 3D using software. It also provides "Street View" with enough detail to evaluate road quality.

One last long ride into the mountains, I fly home in a few days.

No, Ill stay about 125 miles south of Amalfi. My routes have minimal traffic. Today I used a older coastal road that was the main north-south coastal road until about 1965. This road can be seen in the last 2 pictures in the first post. My routes follows the old road for the first 6 miles, and then I'll climb at a 5% to 10% rate for 4 or more miles. Today I came down a very steep and narrow one and a half lane road. It was steep, with a long string of 20% switchbacks, dropping about 1500 ft in 4 miles. I had to control my speed and eye movements or risk going over an Amalfi sized drop.

I'm no longer using the bag in the picture. It was a low cost temporary solution. It didn't interfere, but I'm using a better fitting frame bag now.
