Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saturday - Still focusing on climbing. Took an easy day today though and rode the Y-Foil up Monte Cristo until I reached 1000 ft. Sort of a day off from real climbing. Thighs were a bit heavy today. Nice ride into the mountains though with cool weather and a nice flowing river alongside the road most of the way up. 37.4 miles with 1300 ft of climbing total.

Hmm Sunday my riding day. Icey strong winds, sideways rain and hail, snow. I'm not geared for that in normally sunny Adelaide so stayed inside but there's always next weekend.

I've kept up walking and light jogging week nights though. There was also signs mid week that springs on the way with native flowers popping out yeha.

Posted my charity ride above. Ended up in the ER last night. Turns out I have a blood clot in my lower leg. Never felt it nor did it affect me on the bike. The doc says it's a minor thing that will resolve with Ibuprofen. Strange.

Couple of group rides -- 70 miles Thursday, another 59 Saturday. Napped most of Sunday. Can't complain.

Pike's Peak. My first time at any real elevation this year and it kicked my butt above 12,000'. It wasn't my best time but I was pretty proud of surviving.

Ugh, that was on my bucket list for last summer and then I had a wreck the winter before and took too long rehabbing. Just now starting to climb seriously again. Maybe next year....

Congrats on getting up there though. That's gotta be a bear up top.

Sunday - Was going to be another easy, short ride today. But somehow I wound up doing 40 miles including 900 ft of climbing. Went about 1/3rd of the way up Powder Mt to get in enough uphill to finish the Strava climbing challenge. Surprised it wasn't harder since the Opus only has a 42T small chainring.

Sat: did my second year of D2R2 gravel randoneer. did the 115km route that ends up being 77mi and 8200' climbing. Started off cool in the morning with a bit of mist but it never rained and kept nicely cloudy until lunch. Warmed up but the views were nice without the fog. PR'd most of the hills even taking it a bit easy in the first half to save matches for the big ones in the last third of it. Great ride with my teammates that were also there and always a great ride.

Sun: Woke up with tired legs but not useless so I went for a short 8mi mountain bike ride with a friend. Hopefully the spinning did some good.

Rode from Palo Alto to the Pacific coast and back, my first time over the Santa Cruz Mountains in many years.

I was afraid it was going to be too hard to complete, and my coastal rides were a thing of the past. But I made it, and that feels great!

New city, new roads, new terrain, new weather...same bikes! Just moved from La Crosse, WI, to Durham, NC, probably for a year. It's a nice adventure, as I'd never been to the Triangle area (just Asheville and Charlotte) before last Friday when we rolled into town.

Friday: Evening spin to scout out my new commute...which starts after Labor Day, plus a bit more exploring. 22 miles, 968'.

Sunday: I made a road route and decided to test it out. The Strava heat map helped with creating a decent route, and RWGPS (I splurged for the navigation features) kept me from getting totally lost. But man, those rollers. I'm used to longer climbs/descents with flat stretches, not the constant leg-pounding of endless rollers. And the humidity, and being out of shape, is killing me. 28 miles, 1,490'.

Rainy weekend. I had wanted to ride around Ocala Nat forest, but it was not to be. Monday I had off and was back in Tampa, so I went for a 43 mile ride around Davis Is.

No weekend ride for me as I was at the Historic races at Laguna Seca getting a years worth of oil and gas fumes.
